  • I took my 15 year old daughter for a cross country lesson there, after having a few sessions hacking there before. My daughter had been looking forward to starting cross country for some time. My daughter informed the instructor that she has only ever had hacks and had not been on the cross country course before (I also stated this to office staff when I payed). She also showed the instructor how high she had jumped in the past, which was about a metre. My daughter rode to join the person who would be instructing her with another staff member on her horse. This staff member took her round the course a few times then left her to it. The person who was meant to be instructing my daughter shouted occassional orders from inside her car. My daughter couldn't hear much of what was being shouted. During the other times, the instructor and the staff member spent most of the time talking amongst themselves. When my daughter arrived back, she told me what had happened and said she felt intimidated during the time and felt that the instructor was condescending. I was told by staff, when I went to enquire their normal practice for teaching cross country, that this is something Jill (the owner) does. Also, I was told that the instructor didn't know that my daughter hadn't jumped in their cross country or their arena before. This is certainly not true. The instructor asked my daughter before she left whether she had jumped with them before and she said no. I had also mentioned that she had only been on hacks with them to the girl in the office when I payed. I have emailed the owner but considering that the instructor I am complaining about is the owner's daughter, and taking the lazy and unsafe option of shouting occasional orders from the car being the owner's usual practice, I would be surprised if anything constructive comes of this. It's a shame that a riding stables surrounded by such breath-taking scenery should be so disappointing. I think that they are mostly geared up for one-off hacks with visitors from all over the world coming to take in the amazing views of the Cotswolds. I have taken my daughter there quite a few times for hacks, travelling over an hour's drive to get there. I would like to leave a good report but have to be honest for other customers' sake. My daughter is disappointed as she had been looking forward to starting cross country riding for quite a while. But I truly feel that their practice is unsafe and downright lazy. I would say Cody (newer staff member) is brilliant and very encouraging. The newer (younger) staff are generally hard workers and are friendly but be careful if you've got children as I think some of their practices are unsafe and children/teens could feel intimidated by a certain instructor's attitude.
