Cotehele, St Dominick

4.6
#5 of 72 in Historic Sites in Cornwall
Perched high above the River Tamar, Cotehele stands as one of the best-preserved Tudor houses in the UK. Inside the fortified manor house, discover a rich collection of tapestries, arms and armor, pewter, brass, and old oak furniture. Outside, wander the formally planted terraces, explore the Valley Garden (including a medieval stewpond and dovecote), and visit the orchards. Walk down to the quay and hop aboard the restored sailing barge "Shamrock." To learn more about the history of Cotehele’s once bustling quay, visit the Discovery Centre. For an authentic Cornish experience, pop into the Edgcumbe tearoom for a Cornish cream tea. The surrounding area is beautiful for walking and biking. The place has two cafés, both very nice but I find the one down buy the river more relaxing. Lots of history in the buildings including bedrooms, kitchen and dining area but the real exhibit is the weapons of imperial warfare to look and read about. Plenty to see around the gardens also including the apple orchards.

Good displays and interactive demonstrations. Good history. A bit old fashioned but I like my attractions that way.

Interesting old house and contents. Good restaurant with outside eating area. Gardens are on a steep slope. The mill is quite a walk down to the river.
