Southwold Pier, Southwold

(4.2/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
Southwold Pier offers a nostalgic way to experience the seaside. Pleasure piers, which feature attractions for visitors, had their heyday in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but this one in Southwold still bustles and offers plenty of fun. It extends 190 m (623 ft) out into the sea and holds restaurants, shops, and games. Dine on fresh seafood such as local mussels, browse ceramics and textiles, and head into the amusement arcade for air hockey, bowling, and stomping spiders. Check out the hand-built machines in the under-the-pier show; they offer offbeat entertainment such as "whacking a banker." A shop on the pier sells everything you need for an afternoon of relaxing on the beach. For Southwold Pier and beyond, use our Southwold vacation planner to get the most from your Southwold vacation.

  • Great place. Love the fact they have kept away from the "kiss me quick" and the normal tacky seaside shops. A walk down memory lane. Excellent place for a visit but don't expect cheap beer and tattoo parlours.
  • Loads to do on Southwold pier! My children loved watching the water clock and waiting for it to do its thing, and the 'alternative arcade' is brilliant. Even the seaside tat in the souvenir shops isn't too bad quality. Food is far nicer from the café halfway down than from the nasty fast food chippy as soon as you get onto the pier.
  • Quirky and fun. Stroll to the end to get a great view. Grab a cup of tea and some cake at one of the cafés. Visit the whacky amusement arcade (like no other arcade you'll ever have visited). Just mind you don't drop your phone through the gaps in the planks of the walkway.
  • Semi hipster type old style pier with appropriate shops and arcade attached. The arcade halfway along the pier is excellent. Great for kids with a iron water feature that always captivates and makes them giggle. Well restored and great fun, what's not to like?
  • The best fish and chips ever! Just as you enter the pier a fabulous little restaurant sits and serves great kids menu too. Open all year long....can't wait to revisit. Beach is gorgeous and spotless...and English gem .
