Skipton Castle, Skipton

(4.2/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
See one of England's most complete and best-preserved medieval castles. Explore every corner of this more than 900-year-old castle, which even withstood a three-year siege during the 17th-century Civil War. A comprehensive tour sheet (available in nine languages) contains 40 drawings and descriptions of castle features. View the banquet hall, kitchen, the bed chamber, and even the privy. Imagine what life was like when Skipton Castle provided protection and security from invaders as you climb your way up from the depths of the dungeon to the top story of the watch tower. Pay attention to the masons' marks in the castle’s stones, left for proof of work and later payment. Afterward, relax in the picnic area or tearoom. Put Skipton Castle on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Skipton tourist route planner.

  • If you love castles then this is a great one to explore. Intact, historic, politically important in the civil war, full of nooks and crannies with well informed staff. Set in attractive surroundings next to Skipton Woods and at the top of the High Street, yet invisible to the casual tourist. Still occupied in part by the Fattorini family.
  • A small castle but very well maintained. The information guide pamphlet is very interesting. We used it as a game and try to find the exact room / exact angle.
  • Having this in as good shape as this is hard to do. Everything is kept to quality and you get a really good feel of how it used to be like to live here. As well as this, they do occasional reinactments (and every weekend in August) with shows and dress ups. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in castles and old history
  • Have always loved visiting here and have been with various people over the years. There is a lot to see though the castle is empty and I just love the ancient atmosphere. The grounds are pretty and the history behind the castle is fascinating.
  • There are few castles as intact as Skipton, at least that are accessible to the peasants, so this is well worth the visit. Plenty of friendly, knowledgeable staff on hand. Easy to follow self guided tour sheet. Even better you can take the dog in. Yes. Inside. Really. Apart from the cafe which is fair enough. It's medieval which means steep steps, low doorways, and uneven floors. Cafe does a nice cuppa.
