Castle Tourist Spot
See one of England's most complete and best-preserved medieval castles. Explore every corner of this more than 900-year-old castle, which even withstood a three-year siege during the 17th-century Civil War. A comprehensive tour sheet (available in nine languages) contains 40 drawings and descriptions of castle features. View the banquet hall, kitchen, the bed chamber, and even the privy. Imagine what life was like when Skipton Castle provided protection and security from invaders as you climb your way up from the depths of the dungeon to the top story of the watch tower. Pay attention to the masons' marks in the castle’s stones, left for proof of work and later payment. Afterward, relax in the picnic area or tearoom. Put Skipton Castle on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Skipton tourist route planner.

  • An excellent trip back in time. As you entered each room you were transported back in time, it was as if you lived there. Everything was so real.  more »
  • I thought the entry price of 16 pounds was a bit steep for what was there. The castle was interesting and rather small. It was certainly in good condition for its age. The walk in the woods was rather...  more »

  • Great castle, much bigger than we thought it was. Been to Skipton loads of times but never got round to doing the castle. It is well worth a couple if hours looking round. They had some reenactment's going on and there was a fabulous chap, Peter, who really kept the kids entertained with story's and some magic tricks! They loved it. Thank you
  • An enjoyable day out for all the family. This is a very well-preserved castle, with convenient parking (although be advised that the adjacent parking is not free, and the price varies seasonally - between £2.50 - £4.50/day). Each room has some interesting information boards detailing the function of the room, and associated decor, and the guides are approachable and friendly. Bizarrely, the long-drop toilet and dungeon room seem to attract the most attention(!). Be mindful that the site isn't disability-friendly. There are many steep stone steps. Children might also need to be hand-held at times. I spoke at length to one guide who, when asked at what period glass was used in the windows, told me about stained glass in the mid-1600's. How beautiful that inner courtyard must have looked at that time. There is also a good gift shop, with many books detailing Skipton and its history.
  • Absolutely fabulous castle and grounds. The castle is all in tact and you enter from the main high street through a cobbled entrance. It is an ideal day out in the wetter weather, for kids and grownups, like when we went. It's not too expensive to access and there is a shop and tea room all within the grounds. But if you are more hungry you can take a picnic or there are plenty of places to suit anyone's pockets in the town just a few steps away.
  • Recommended route given which was easy to follow and made sure nothing was missed. However, be prepared to see just the castle of empty rooms, not much on display to see. A bit overpriced for what is here.
  • Near complete medieval castle , well worth exploring. Friendly and helpful guides on hand if you need them oh, and lovely fresh cream scones in the tea room. Well worth a visit
