Weald & Downland Open Air Museum recreates over 500 years of rural English life by providing real examples of buildings, tools, food, and crafts from the homesteads of the countryside. You’ll find a farmhouse, cattle sheds, a granary, a windmill, several types of barns, and 50 other buildings, all carefully dismantled and rebuilt on the site. Look at traditional tools and watch demonstrations about life in a by-gone era. Try the cooking made in the traditional Tudor kitchen and buy crafts--all made the old fashioned way--from the artisans working on site. Take the dog for a walk around the grounds to get a look at the farm animals. • A lovely place to visit. Lots of outdoor space, animals and houses. Would be great for a picnic on a sunny day - sadly not ours.
  • First visit in decades since a school trip when I was 8! It hasn't lost any of its magic and I still love Bayleaf! The children in costume recreating a Victorian schoolhouse scene were charming. Refre...  read more »
  • I went to this museum on a school trip 20+ years ago & simply fell in love. With each visit I am transported back to the Mediaeval times! To get my fill of it now & to avoid my boys getting bored of seeing the same buildings every year, we time our visits with the Christmas Market as there is an array of local businesses that come to the site along with entertainment and plenty of food choices. A fun day out had by all!
  • An open air museum bringing to life hundreds of years of human history. Events, sights and hands-on activities. An education for all ages. Beautiful buildings, gardens and walks. A real treat.
  • Enjoyed our day here. Everything is set up like it is a working place, eg chopped veg in the kitchen in the houses. There is a lot of walking between buildings and mostly open so not one for a rainy day.
  • Great place to visit if you love history and fresh air, lovely to walk around the site and wander round the houses.
  • Really interesting place. Spent most of the day here. Although, it will be much better when the new café and visitor center is finished as the kiosk and temporary seating isn't great.
