Elmley National Nature Reserve Reviews
Normally a great place to visit, but ... I understand it's been an extensive dry first half to the year, and the net outcome is that the pools have all dried up and so there are no birds to be seen fr... more »
We stayed in Kingshill Cottage, which was comfortable and reasonably well equipped. But the main attraction is all the wildlife. This is a beautiful place to stay. more »
Beautiful, peaceful and relaxing location, we saw lots of birds or prey, reed warblers and buntings. We all saw a wild hare, butterflies, wading and sea birds, took our two kids aged 9 & 12, if you li... more »
My partner and I stayed for 2 days of hiking around the reserve, watching birds and one night in Vanellus hut. It was the perfect place and amount of time to relax from our busy life in London. We arranged both an holistic massage treatment by Roz which was deeply relaxing. We ordered food in advance for our dinner which has been delivered at the hut and was really tasty (special mention for the amazing chocolate cake we had!). I would definitely recommend it if you need a break from the city and you want to experience being in the middle of nowhere listening to nothing else but the noise of nature and animals and being wake up by the sunshine in a fluffy and comfortable bed.
Elmley is a unique nature reserve, in the sense that you need to drive your car through the reserve to get to the car park. On your journey to the car park, you will encounter a wide variety of wildlife, including the cows that graze the fields! You are able to park your car to the side of the road and use it as a hide as you travel up. The road is wide enough for two cars so there's no sense of being rushed by other motorists to reach the end. Once you do park up, there are lots of walking trails around the reserve to explore. Would definitely recommend visiting Elmley if you are on the island!
Highly recommended. Kestrels, lapwings, owls, hares: Elmley has it all. The reception was pleasant and informative; the lodging top-notch; and the wildlife sublime.
We stayed in the Saltbox for 3 nights. It is a really unique experience. Every day a family of moorhens passed by and we saw lapwings and curlews from the hides on the reserve. One evening a hare was surprised to see us as it passed and we were able to get a good look at it for a few seconds! It was really beautiful. The accommodation is excellent, well equipped and providing real comfort, including lovely shower toiletries. Bed is super comfy 😊. It is very cosy in the evening, the lighting is great. You can really get a sense of being cut off from the world for a while. We travelled by public transport which can prove challenging but is doable. We were kindly picked up from Swale station by Rebecca. We walked from our hut to the entrance which is about a 25 minute walk and then there is a bus stop to Sittingbourne or the opposite side to Sheerness (be careful crossing the main road!). Taxis came in very handy, we used iCars who were great, they will pick you up from the office if you don't want to walk. The staff are very friendly and we would definitely stay here again 😊😊
I loved the place. Large open expanse of marsh land. As soon as we drove in there were birds and Hares to be spotted. The walk to the hides was eventful with Curlews in abundance. Arrived at the first hide. Nothing to be seen, then suddenly over a hundred Dunlin appeared and sat on the island opposite. Fantastic.
