The Wordsworth Family moved into Rydal Mount, in the heart of the Lake District, in 1813 and rented the house continually for 46 years until the death of Mary Wordsworth in 1859. Rydal Mount was the largest house the Wordsworths lived in and became a much-loved family home.

Rydal Mount dates from the 16th Century when the house was a small yeoman style cottage. Here he wrote many of his poems and revised and improved much of his earlier works including the Prelude and the famous 'Daffodils' poem. He became England's finest poet and went on to be poet Laureate to Queen Victoria.

Explore the historic home, which contains many original pieces of furniture and personal effects of the Wordsworth; on the first floor three of the family bedrooms are open to the public: William and Mary’s, Dorothy Wordsworth’s and Dora Wordsworth’s. Wordsworth added the Study at the top of the house while he lived at Rydal Mount which currently contains a number of manuscripts, books and family memorabilia.

The house returned to the Wordsworth family when, in 1969, Mary Henderson (nee Wordsworth), the great great granddaughter of the poet bought the house and opened it to the public in the following year. Her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren regularly stay in the house and therefore the house retains the feel of being a ‘family home’

Wander around the beautiful terraced gardens landscaped by the poet himself and enjoy the magnificent views of Lake Windermere and Rydal Water whilst enjoying a slice of homemade cake in the Tea Room.

  • Beautiful gardens. Did not pay any attention to the house. Attended a wedding here. Very helpful staff.
  • Very pretty and well maintained grounds with free access. Nice views and waterfall. The building is a private conference centre.
  • A lovely old house full of history and artefacts and facts about it's famous owner - William Wordsworth. Well worth a slow explore to appreciate the pictures, letters and other paraphernalia of a talented poet. The family still own it and use it was their holiday cottage apparently! The gardens seem to go on forever but they make a lovely walk on a fine day.
  • Absolutely gorgeous summer day in August. Lovely long walk with the wife😍😍
  • Really get the atmosphere in the house. The garden is well worth exploring too.
