  • Kept missing this place on the way to Dorset (weekends 7 before 1pm) but this time travelling on a weekday & got there for 1pm. Very good guide & toured outside & the ground floor only. Very enjoyable...  more »
  • The house is only open for six weeks each year and not at weekends but is well worth a visit. The guides are excellent and very knowledgeable and the groups on each tour can be small (we had 6 people)...  more »
  • Do not miss the fascinating tour of a lovely house with an intriguing history. A lovely contrast to so many country houses which have become de facto museums - this is a home and throughout the tour w...  more »

  • A run down shabby estate. Run by ex national trust employees who havent got a clue how to run this estate like it was with proper estate managers in the past. It just goes to show that without a proper estate manager how this estate went down hill.
  • A lovely neoclassical building, with huge grounds and the whiff of history in the air.
  • A Palladian style mansion designed by Capability Brown and his architect son-in-law in the late 1700s. Situated about a mile south of Romsey town centre, just off the A27 southern bypass. An imposing entrance hall acts as a gallery of classical Roman sculptures. At the rear of the house are three imposing reception rooms that have been restored to their Jacobean splendour, with collections of fine European ceramics and Wedgewood pieces given by Josiah W himself. The two most famous residents were Lord Palmerston (twice Victoria's Prime Minister), and then after WW2 Earl Mountbatten of Burma. The north rooms of the house include many fascinating items of Mountbatten memorabilia. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles are regular visitors. The House is only open to the public on weekday afternoons during July and August. There are conducted tours of the main ground floor rooms that last just over an hour. The local volunteer guides are very knowledgeable. If you have to wait for a tour group to assemble there is a video of the highlights of Mountbatten's life, or you can wander on the lawns that slope gently down from the house to the river Test, the finest salmon and trout rivers in southern England. The tours are wheelchair accessible, with limited disabled parking close to the house. The main carpark is about 5 minutes walk from the House. There are no refreshment facilities on site, as Romsey centre boasts a wide range of eating and drinking places.
