Rochester Castle, Rochester

4.2
Take a look inside one of the best-preserved examples of Norman architecture in England at Rochester Castle. Climb the spiral staircases to the top of the 34 m (113 ft) keep, the most prominent feature of the 12th-century castle. Rent an audio guide to supplement the diagrams and information panels around the site. A children's guide to the castle can be purchased in the gift shop. Close your eyes and let your imagination roam. Think of the dancing, the music, the feasting which must have taken place in the Great Hall, and think of the noise of battle as you were attacked by no ...  more »

  • Iconic style castle that is great for kids to enjoy. It is relatively inexpensive, and there are numerous corridors, passageways and steps to explore. This castle is predominantly a ruin, but there are many fantastic sights to see. Views from the top are outstanding, across the Medway and Rochester. Easy walking distance to the town and Cathedral. Highly recommended day out.
  • Oldest full standing normsn castle. Well worth a visit. Unless wheelchair bound or find walking difficult. Lots of information. Lovely big garden for family picnics and children ball games. Rochester itself is a lovely quaint place to visit. Lots of smaller shops, cafes , pubs and resturaunts. I go to Rochester quite a bit. Lots of different festivals Look out for some.
  • I love Rochester Castle. It has obviously been repaired a lot over the years but still looks so authentic and you can go around most of it and get all the way to the top. Nice clean outdoor area and close to bars and cafes in Rochester High Street.
  • The National Trust has done an amazing job with this castle. Take the audio guide. The keep although damaged is explained excellently through the tool. Also as a bonus the view from the top is amazing
  • Beautiful castle located on the River Medway. The castle is small and, although you can still go over it and climb to the top, it is mostly a shell. I recommend picking up an audio tour for extra information. Wonderful views from the top. The grounds are a great place to sit and relax (especially with a picnic) and there are lots of shops and caf├ęs a stone's throw away on the high street.
