Rochester Castle, Rochester

4.3
Take a look inside one of the best-preserved examples of Norman architecture in England at Rochester Castle. Climb the spiral staircases to the top of the 34 m (113 ft) keep, the most prominent feature of the 12th-century castle. Rent an audio guide to supplement the diagrams and information panels around the site. A children's guide to the castle can be purchased in the gift shop. • Nice place to visit if you live in London or surrounding. Nice historical place with nice river views. There is a car park but it's not a big one but you can park on road near by. There is a separate car park for blue badge holders. There is a cathedral next to the castle which is also very historical and worth visiting. There is nice place to sit next to the river which is behind the castle. You walk down from castle or you can take your car there is park there as well.
  • Rochester, being an old Dickensian town, is full of character and nice shops. The bars and restaurants are in keeping with the ambience visitors can "people watch" for hours. Rochester boasts a beautiful cathedral with a remembrance rose garden and along with the crypt a lovely place to lose yourself, away from the busy high street (admission free but donations gratefully accepted) Then, of course, you have the Norman castle, as children, we played out many battles inside and around the grounds for free but with the march of time an admission fee is now charged to go into the magnificent keep. If you still have enough puff left the museum, guild hall and Charles Dickens' Swiss chalet should not be missed, also all free of charge. Not bad to have done all that for under a tenner.
  • We had a great time down at Rochester Castle. The views from the top of the castle were amazing. You get both great views of the river Medway and on the other side you get great views of the historic city of Rochester. The Norman Tower that you can go up has some fairly steep stairs and there is only one way up and down. But it's well worth the effort. There are toilets in the grounds to the Castle and a small gift shop. It is a English Heritage castle and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit.
  • A great castle unfortunately time hasn't been kind to it and it is missing it's main floors and ceiling. Noted for it's three square and one round towers which is because King John had to attack his own castle to regain control of it in 1215 and then had to repair it. It is the tallest Norman keep in England and one of first built after the Norman conquest.
  • Really lovely castle with a fascinating history. Once we visited during a festival/recreation and it was spectacular. All of the attractions were really informative, yet entertaining. Not too far from South/South East London, either, so it's perfect for a weekend getaway.
