  • It is possible to visit this walled garden without staying at Millgate House. There is a little door next to the main entrance that leads round the side of the house to the garden at the back, and an honest box for donations. I am not a gardener at all, but recognise the imagination and sheer hard work which has gone into creating this award-winning horticultural haven. Plants and flowers to delight (even out of the summer months) and splendid views back to the house.
  • Although we stayed just the one night at Millgate House it was truly memorable and we most certainly will be back. From all the good reviews our expectations were high and from the outset they were exceeded in every respect. The house itself is a lovely building, ideally situated off the town square with a garden at the rear which must be fabulous in the summer months. The whole house is exquisitely furnished to reflect the owners' taste in antiques and fine art of character. Our room which overlooked the garden and beyond the river and rolling Yorkshire countryside was spacious and comfortable and we were provided with everything to ensure an enjoyable and relaxed stay. First impressions are always important and Austin and Tim are very warm and welcoming hosts. They go the extra mile to please guests and make the time spent with them an individual experience with little touches such as a complimentary drink on arrival, a taster of fine whisky for the evening and fresh milk from the kitchen fridge for guests to use for their coffee and tea in their rooms. Private safe parking is also provided. The breakfast was excellent, a feast for the eyes and taste buds and flawlessly presented. Austin and Tim are perfect hosts, warm and friendly yet thoroughly professional at all times as are their young and competent staff. In sum we had a wonderful time at Millgate House. The location ambiance and service can not be faulted and we look forward to a return visit.
