  • Another impressive house with well furnished/decorated rooms. 6 panels of what was a 12 sectioned, rare Coromandel screen is on display. Not impressed with the tea rooms. Quite dark and humid. There i...  more »

  • We visited Basildon Park this afternoon and were in for a real treat. The route through the house had been reversed it was like seeing it for the first time. The rooms were presented as if you were visiting as a guest for Dinner. The curtains were closed and the rooms lit by electric candle light and chandlers the transformation was amazing, the rooms came alive like they have never been seen by us before. The drapes, carvings and wall coverings were all highlighted to transform the rooms in to a magical place. With paintings lit their beauty enhanced enableing us to really see them in all their glory. This presentation of the house only lasts till half term when it will revert to day time. So visit soon and pray that the National trust will turn the lights on again. The staff and volunteers were so informed and friendly.
  • Welcoming. You feel you are entering a home not just a house. The brief notes in each room from Lady Illife give insight into her home. Great for kids too. Lots of things to get involved with. Wonderful smell of cooking from the kitchen. Flapjack, offered to the children. Very helpful staff. Altogether a lovely experience.
  • Oh dear, long queues at the cafe, dry brownies. But the egg sandwiches were good. The high chair was grubby, as was the pram/children's room in general. I wouldn't go again. It's going to be a picnic for sure. And I thought the gardens were rather sad. If it wasn't for the trees it would have been very disappointing.
  • Some hands on bits to give a feel of the place. Knowledgeable volunteers. Lovely parkland walks. Could make a whole day out by taking a picnic.
  • Lovely house with helpful guides. The "shell room" is a sight to behold. Very impressive. The art collection throughout the house is superb. If you are a National Trust member your entrance is free. Plenty of parking. Wheelchair access was good with a free transport to the house for those who need help.
