Southsea Castle, Portsmouth
(4.2/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Southsea Castle served England’s rulers, beginning with Henry VIII, variously as a fortress, prison, vantage point, or simply a place to sleep while inspecting Portsmouth’s defenses. Watching from this castle, Henry VIII saw his prized vessel the Mary Rose sink. Take a look around yourself, as admission is free, and make sure to see the tunnel for moat defense. Get a feel for the long history of this fort only decommissioned from active military service in 1960. See Southsea Castle and all Portsmouth has to offer by arranging your trip with our Portsmouth vacation planner.

  • I had such a great time visiting the castle. Great signage inside the castle, and the folks there have done such a great job with everything. Free entry, and a place I will definitely visit again. Gre...  more »
  • From here you can see where the Mary Rose sank. It doesn't take too long to walk around the walls but it is interesting to stand where Henry VIII stood and watch his flag ship sink.
  • It's quite small so doesn't take long to visit but is free and informative. They tend to have weddings there so sometimes you can't get to all the areas or walk around the top but if you can the view ...  more »

  • Picturesque and historic. The tunnels are worth going down. The in-house brewer makes a great double IPA. No entrance fee so leave a donation.
  • Free entry, commanding views of the Solent and an interesting exhibition on the history of the site. If you're in Southsea and interested in the heritage of the city, then definitely pay the castle a visit.
  • Great free museum with enough to keep children entertained too - cafe/restaurant is good too
  • Great castle - free entry with Victorious Festival ticket - champagne bar in summer! Yum!
  • Always an interesting visit. Also, the cafe is excellent, and there are often special events on for kids - on our last visit, the munchkins got to make pirate hats, hooks and parrots!
