Inspirock Rating:
4.2/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web
Southsea Castle served England’s rulers, beginning with Henry VIII, variously as a fortress, prison, vantage point, or simply a place to sleep while inspecting Portsmouth’s defenses. Watching from this castle, Henry VIII saw his prized vessel the Mary Rose sink. Take a look around yourself, as admission is free, and make sure to see the tunnel for moat defense. Get a feel for the long history of this fort only decommissioned from active military service in 1960. See Southsea Castle and all Portsmouth has to offer by arranging your trip with our Portsmouth vacation planner.

  • Really great museum, especially considering it's free. Views across the water are fantastic, plenty of displays and information on the history inside. The tunnels are also worth checking out.
  • Lovely place, worth visiting. A bit of history.
  • Nice castle by the sea with free entrance. Good view from the roof.
  • Awesome thick castle walls, great café, sea view, love the turret
  • It's not huge but there's quite a bit to do and see. The on site cafe and gift shop are really good, and the champagne bar is great. It's bin the heart of Southsea and there's a ton of history to take it.
