Southsea Castle, Portsmouth

4.2
#4 of 12 in Historic Sites in Portsmouth
Castle Tourist Spot
Southsea Castle served England’s rulers, beginning with Henry VIII, variously as a fortress, prison, vantage point, or simply a place to sleep while inspecting Portsmouth’s defenses. Watching from this castle, Henry VIII saw his prized vessel the Mary Rose sink. Take a look around yourself, as admission is free, and make sure to see the tunnel for moat defense. Get a feel for the long history of this fort only decommissioned from active military service in 1960. See Southsea Castle and all Portsmouth has to offer by arranging your trip with our Portsmouth vacation planner.

  • We were just passing and popped in when we saw that entry was free! You get a real sense of atmosphere wit h all the old cannons facing out to sea and also very good views of all the passing ships  more »
  • More a fort than a castle, but historically and aesthetically pleasing. Part of a pleasant and interesting walk from Old Portsmouth to Southsea.  more »
  • Nice to see it is still in use today and learn about it's historical importance. The lovely views across the Solent from here are outstanding.  more »

  • This is a great place to visit, with a few features that children would like. The views from the top of the castle are good too. Also, check out how thick the walls are!
  • The castle is a great piece of English history and a Portsmouth postcard spot. There are a few exhibits in the castle detailing the history of the place. There is a brewery in the castle too, selling beers and ales to take away with you. You get some great views of Portsmouth and the Solent from here too.
  • Small, but it is free and they have made a real effort to make this interesting. Henry VIII visited here, as did the Queen, so I thought it worth a visit whilst in the area.
  • An amazing piece of history and completely free. Great views over the Solent from the battlements.
  • A nice walk around and the champagne bar in the summer is a great place to to on a nice sunny evening
