  • For the discerning artillery enthusiast, the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson are absolute heaven. With a huge collection ranging from anti-aircraft cannon to a 14-inch naval gun and everything inbetween, Fort Nelson is most certainly worth a visit. It can be somewhat difficult to reach the fort, and it is not recommended to try and go by foot from Portsmouth itself to the fort. For a real treat, arriving around mid-day will allow you to watch the museum's 25-pounder howitzer being fired, and you can in fact book a ticket to fire the gun yourself! Make sure to allow a good few hours to see everything at this exceptional museum!
  • Huge amount to see and do for free admission (donation suggested). The junior assault course doesn't look that tricky for older children but is probably sufficiently different from normal play areas it's worth the 3.50 admission (one charge for the duration of your visit I believe). The café, whilst not cheap, is clean and smart and the food is of a high standard. If you have any interest in artillery, warfare or 'modern' fortifications it's a must see. It's even worth visiting just for the view. The only thing lacking is that the shop area is rather bland.
  • Interesting history to be discovered. Lots to do & see. Free parking and free entry, so go in the morning & treat yourself to lunch. Check for special events throughout the year.
  • Great exhibits. Lots of interesting info. Fun for children. Lots of large guns and military equipment. Worth a visit!
  • Free entry. Many interesting things displayed (if you like military) and nice staff.
