Compton Acres, Poole

4.4
#5 of 11 in Parks in Poole
Visit Compton Acres, a stretch of picturesque gardens looking out over Poole Harbour. Thomas William Simpson had a vision of a garden composed of separate garden rooms, each illustrating a particular garden style from around the world. Simpson planned the paths and terraces so that only one garden area could be experienced at a time. Experience the care and precision in each room's planning. Rare plants, trees, and garden statuary were gathered from across the globe to make the experience as authentic as possible. A Japanese garden designer and workmen were even brought to create the Japanese Garden area, complete with Japanese stones and earth. Today you can enjoy ten distinct areas in the garden, including a Roman Garden with a miniature pool and grotto, an Italian Garden, Canadian Woodland Walk, Indian Tropical Valley, Egyptian Court, Spanish Water Garden, Scottish Heather Dell, Garden of Memory, and the Japanese Garden. • This was our first time at Compton Acres and it was a very enjoyable experience. Fantastic gardens! Had lunch in the coffee shop where the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we were even allowed to bring our Golden Retriever inside. Certainly coming back. Good value for money!
  • We went with our children and the grandparents on a drizzly but warm bank holiday Sunday. The price to get in is very reasonable seeing as we were here for well over 4 hours. The gardens are quite outstanding, beautifully kept and the different ways to get around and see everything kept our young boys occupied leading us around all the walkways. The venue would be a magnificent place to get married or for any party and the food is beyond outstanding. I can understand why the restaurant is booked up well in advance! My only quibble is the play area, this is not a park it's just a teepee really and some decking. It's a shame as a park would fit in wonderfully in the space, don't get my wrong though my kids were not disappointed as they loved the rest of the gardens. All in all, definitely visit this place of peace and tranquility it will make you feel a thousand miles from Bournemouth!
  • Peaceful, with vistas to delight. Perfect communion with the Divine on an Easter Sunday!
  • Beautiful place. Went with 2 kids under 6, the wife and inlaws and not one complaint. It is very tranquil and beautiful. The gardens are well kept and the kids liked all the different routes and waterfalls. The only negative is the (so called kids play area) its just some decking with a view. The didn't mind because the place is so nice but the site could easily put a slide and swings up there for the kids to have a 10 minutes distraction. The food is amazing, the little cafe area in the gardens does good food and has kid lunch bags so they were happy, the inlaws went to the main restaurant and said it's the best food they have had in years and rated it 5* and very good value for money (if it has the mother in law's approval then it's unbelievably good). Would love to come again when all the flowers are in bloom and I would imagine it's even better. Great gardens, beautiful with amazing food at a good price.
  • Wonderful place to visit at any season! My kid love there too.

Where to stay in Poole

Consider renting an apartment inside a redeveloped warehouse in Poole's quay. This area is full of attractions and views over the port, where boats leave for cruises to nearby islands. The town center and the harbor are near each other, and lodging is available in both areas.
