Smeaton's Tower, Plymouth

4.5
Smeaton's Tower is a memorial to celebrated civil engineer John Smeaton, designer of the third and most notable Eddystone Lighthouse. A major step forward in lighthouse design, Smeaton's structure was in use from 1759 to 1877, until erosion of the ledge it was built upon forced new construction. The tower was largely dismantled and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe in Plymouth, Devon, where it stands today.

The lighthouse is one of Plymouth's most iconic tourist attractions.

It is currently closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will re-open to the public in later in 2020.

  • Great place to spend a couple of hours with the family. Reasonable entry price to spend as long as you like inside, staff are friendly and informative. Great historical location filled with information and facts about the towers and lighthouses in general. Amazing view from the top as well. In all, great place to take the family for a couple of hours to enjoy on a lazy day in Plymouth.
  • Amazing views. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Really interesting finding out about life in a lighthouse. Well worth a visit
  • This place is totally awesome. We were welcomed from a very nice woman that made us feel comfortable in visiting the lighthouse. There's an amazing view up there- I wish there were more than five stars!
  • Stood a top The Hoe in a smart red striped jacket looking out towards the English Channel and inland over the city and the moors beyond. One of Plymouth's most famous landmarks. Definitely worth a visit. If you are fit enough climb the stairs to the top.
  • My husband and our son really enjoyed their visit to this lighthouse. They found it really interesting and the views from the top were superb.
