  • You could combine a visit to pevensy castle with a visit to Battle and Hastings. Pevensey castle is a place with a rich history. Definitely worth the visit.  more »
  • I visited the castle on a bitterly cold day but found the history of it really interesting. Guide books advise 45 minutes to walk around the site but I must have spent closer to 2.5 hours there. The g...  more »

  • One of my favourite historical castles in East Sussex. An excellent place for walking or even enjoying a picnic in the vast grounds. Folklore says in the dark of night you can sometimes see pirate flat boats floating in the surrounding moat and eerie inexplicable lights appearing from within the ancient castle. A must visit for visitors interested in 1066 history.
  • Walls and towers. Seriously old and steeped in history. From Roman to WW 2. Great space. Perfect for kids, adults, dogs and picnics. Though in effect a ruin, its sheer scale radiates importance. You only pay when you cross into the inner courtyard. Small car park.
  • Outstanding history. Unspoilt and utterly unique. Requires an inquisitive mind and imagination. (Children and young people excel here) Don't expect a theme park or 'Disney World' Castle. But enjoy real history and medieval life - warts and all! Not the place for serial moaners!
  • The castle has a fascinating history going back to Roman times, when it would have been surrounded by the sea at high tides. I think it is fair to say that though it was started by Roman knowledge, it was finished by Norman wisdom.
  • Parking in the small (I think council owned) car park is £2 for all day. It did look like you could park west of the castle on a surrounding road for free. Next to the car park opposite the Castle tea rooms is the public convenience which were clean. For men you have to see the urinals as they look ancient and made me chuckle. Like roman helmets attached to the wall. Paying entrance is for the inner medieval castle itself and not the surrounding larger roman walls. There are some steep slippery steps so care should be taken. There is a small kiosk hut which sells gifts as well as your entrance ticket. The audio guide is good and helps understanding the castles history without droning on and getting too boring. As EH members entrance was free to me and my family. Use your Tesco clubcard vouchers to help pay for membership.
