Aira Force Waterfall, Penrith

Must see · Historic Walking Area · Waterfall
Take a walk in ancient woodlands and landscaped glades to Aira Force Waterfall, a 20 m (65 ft) waterfall in the Lake District. Hammer in a coin to make a wish at the Wish Tree. Extend your walk past the falls along the river, and glimpse smaller waterfalls and even some red squirrels. Wear good footwear, as the walk to the falls is steep and damp at times. • Luckily we had glorious weather which makes everything better. I'm not marking it down because of lack of disabled access. That's just the geography. Lovely walk, steep and uneven in places. Needs...  more »
  • We visited late afternoon, so wasn’t so busy and we got a parking space. The walk up to water fall wasn’t to difficult but on uneven surface.  more »
  • We got here at around 9:45 on a Sunday morning and just got one of the last parking spaces as it’s a very popular place. Parking is expensive but that’s expected for non National Trust...  more »
  • not too challenging, to go to the force you have the choice to go in a circular route, crossing a small stone bridge where you have fabulous views of the fall. you can choose to continue back to the car park the way you came, through beautiful woodland or you can continue your descent along the river bank on a narrow path and take in the wonderful ancient trees on the way back to the car park. I would say you need an hour this would include photo opportunities and just taking in the beautiful falls.
  • Great fun scrambling along paths beside the torrent. Good views of waterfalls in the woods. Lovely surrounding countryside. Atmospheric in the pouring rain.
  • Lovely fresh walk out with a wide range of beautiful Lakes views as you'd expect. The waterfalls are full of surprises ... many smaller falls leading to the most stunning view from either the top or bottom of the big one! If you love waterfalls, well worth a visit. Parking is limited though so walk or go out of peak times.
  • For non members, parking is extremely expensive so make sure you've plenty of change. The paths are well maintained however and the café us good. You can get great views of the waterfall thanks to the bridges over the top and just past the plunge pool.
  • Lovely walk up to the waterfall. Very beautiful. Worth keep walking up for another couple of bridges as there is plenty more lovely bits to see further up. You can walk either side of the stream so worth taking one side up and coming back down the other as you get very different views
