Aira Force, Penrith

(4.7/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Take a walk in ancient woodlands and landscaped glades to Aira Force, a 20 m (65 ft) waterfall in the Lake District. Hammer in a coin to make a wish at the Wish Tree. Extend your walk past the falls along the river, and glimpse smaller waterfalls and even some red squirrels. Wear good footwear, as the walk to the falls is steep and damp at times. Arrange to visit Aira Force and other attractions in Penrith using our Penrith family vacation planner.

  • We started our walk from the upper bridge and follow the stream. For us, the best view of the fall was right at the bottom of the stairs where you can appreciate the magnitude of the fall. The little ...  more »

  • Its really expensive to park here. It's £5 for 2 hours and £7 for 4 hours. It's only half a half mile walk to Aira force Waterfall and it's one mile to High force waterfall. You can have a gentle stroll stopping to take photos all the way to the top and back in just over an hour easily so buy your parking ticket accordingly. It's a really nice, easy walk with great views. If possible get the ferry to Aira force pier and walk up, thus saving on parking fees!!
  • Lovely walk around the wood with a beautiful waterfall. Café is well stocked with tasty food and friendly staff. There is also a mini gift shop in the car park where the staff were very polite and helpful. Turn up early as the car park fills quickly!!!
  • Ullswater is a truly beautiful place, and no better than when the weather is good. We went most recently in early October and whilst it was slightly cool, the sun shine throughout and showed the Autumn leaves up in stunning colours. We took a trip on the Ullswater steamer from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding and back. The lake reflects the landscape like a perfect natural mirror and makes stunning photographs so easy to take. The following day we drive along the lake side to pay another visit to Aira Force; yet another of the Lake Districts natural beauty spots. This time, we parked at the new National Trust car park at the bottom of the falls. After a short walk through the trees, we arrived at the falls. Again, stunning photography is guaranteed, although compared to last time, the falls weren't quite as vigorous - probably as a consequence of all the good weather/time of year. Well worth a visit at any time of year, but especially rewarding in Spring/Autumn.
  • A really good place for a family walk. Exciting yet not dangerous (not in a poring weather of course). Follow the mountain stream and water fall to climb the mountain, and you could find the beauty of nature. Btw, the parking is convincing.
  • A great place to walk up to the waterfall, one side is a hilly climb the other less so. National Trust car park, toilets and shop. What more could you ask for.
