Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland

Glenkinchie distillery is a Scotch single malt whisky distillery in East Lothian, Scotland. It is one of the six distilleries in the Lowland region. It is owned by the drinks giant Diageo. The DistilleryGlenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian. It is situated about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is set in farmland. The name 'Kinchie' is a corruption of 'De Quincy', the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate, While there are no direct records it seems likely that Glenkinchie is the Milton Distillery previous recorded in the area. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1853, the Rate Brothers were bankrupted and the site converted to a sawmill. In 1881, the plant was rebuilt and whisky-making restarted under Maj. James Grey.In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky. The Glenkinchie label was relatively little known until 1989, when United Distillers started marketing it under their Classic Malts brand.ExpressionsGlenkinchie 12 Year Old Tasting notes: On the nose aromatic and floral notes. On the palate it is sweet with a slight liquorice aftertaste and a dry finish.

  • One of the distinguishing features of Glenkinchie is their museum of whisky-making, with a lot of interesting artifacts and an operational cross-section model of a distillery. We did not go on a tour,...  more »
  • Distillery 30 km from Edinburgh, paid the visit includes a guided tour and a tasting of 4 whisky (and more) with Judah on the palate. I highly recommend the Guide William (old distillery worker) that will enchant you with its style worn by Shakespearean actor.

  • This is the closest distillery from Edinburgh, just a 30 min drive down. They have a coach that ferries folks to the distillery and back. The drive is beautiful and the tour is very good. The staff are very friendly and generous. All in all, highly recommend.
  • Caught their shuttle outside Howies in EDI and took the full tour with 4 tastings. Divided us up by. Umber of tastings selected (2 vs 4) and we got to see and smell everything. Real joy to actually see a full scale replica of the entire process as it once was (now malting and drying done offsite). Nice non-pester style. Did not get to the taste from the process (some do sample the Lee ask distillate). Very nice tour and very nice staff. Note you can NOT photograph during the week while distilling but can during the weekends.
  • Brian from Glenkinchie was our guide for this tour and he was fantastic! I didn't know beforehand the process involved in making "malt whiskey" but through his expert knowledge and entertaining delivery he captivated my attention. Whether you are a whiskey-lover or not I highly recommend this tour! It was well worth it!!!
