Paignton Pier, Paignton

#4 of 18 in Sightseeing in English Riviera
Pier / Boardwalk Tourist Spot
Home to Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera in the late 19th century, Paignton Pier is a pleasure pier that provided Victorian visitors with dancing, singing, and music over the water. A fire devastated the original buildings in 1919, but the pier was restored in 1980 with an extended arcade. From the outside it appears that a series of stylish buildings make up an avenue, but these "buildings" are actually one long entertainment complex with a carousel, bumper cars, slides, and games. Enjoy plenty of snack selections and a romantic view over the water. • Lots of family fun with a large games arcade for all ages. If you walk through to the arcade you'll come to a quiet end of the pier. Unfortunately no fishing is allowed. It's well lit and friendly. There's a few tea rooms and shops at the entrance.
  • Visited Paignton on the 4th June for the air show and decided to view the activities from the Pier. Found a quiet spot towards the end of the Pier and waited for the show to begin. After a while we were approached by a Pier representative, I think, as he was not wearing any identification, who asked if we here to view the show. I replied we were, he then told us we could not remain on the Pier unless we used an attraction or bought something. I explain there were signs that entrance to the Pier was free and no mention that we had to spend money to remain. He replied that entrance was free, but you are expected to buy something. I did not wish argue, so I bought a coffee. Has anyone else have a similar experience?
  • Everything for kids, eco park, beach fun fair the lot. Kids loved it! Plus harvester my favourite
  • Wonderful pier experience.... great activities and atmosphere... many improvements over recent years.
  • Nicely laid out (better than it was a few years ago) but a bit pricey for the attractions at the end of the pier. Claw machines are fixed! Better off using the ones in town.

Where to stay in Paignton

A room near the harbor provides a view over the water. However, a historical cottage outside the town center may be the ideal getaway. A cottage offers seclusion, within walking distance of the town's main attractions.
