Brasenose College, Oxford

4.2
#120 of 260 in Things to do in Oxford
Originally established as ‘The King's Hall and College of Brasenose’ for the study of sophistry, logic, philosophy and, above all, theology. The founders of Brasenose College were Sir Richard Sutton, a lawyer, and William Smyth, Bishop of Lincoln.

The name of the College has always fascinated visitors to Oxford. There have been several interpretations of it, including the suggestion that it is derived from ‘brasen huis' (brewhouse). The most likely explanation is that it refers to a ‘brazen' (brass or bronze) door knocker in the shape of a nose.

  • Easily one of my favorite Oxford colleges. Brasenose offers a wonderful view of the adjacent camera and University church. I particularly like the college bar, dining hall, and library. The chapel is also a nice and peaceful place. Make sure you find a student to take you inside for free 😉
  • Brasenose college chapel has the most exquisite ceiling. Brasenose has always been a popular film site location for filming Inspector Morse show. See inside Oxford colleges with #VisitOxfordTours
  • Not worth a visit if you're treated with contempt by the security officer here with a discourteous tone and an unprofessional attitude. Visit Lincoln instead where you will experience a better degree of initial hospitality.
  • Excellent to meet the Brasenose college Class of 1988-89. Reunion at Oxford university was extraordinary, memorable and wonderful. Wow, what an amazing experience. Yes I was there and it is part of my story. Meshack khosa
  • Very nice piece of architecture
