Sat 18th June. 7 of us from Leigh Model Railway Society spent the day here. It was a fantastic day. Very interesting step back in time. Even in the 6hrs we spent was not long enough to cram everything in. The underground tour was great and so was our guide TAZ he was both funny and informative,TOP BLOKE.... The food was top nosh in the cafe. The only down side was the train stops running to early at 3pm, 4pm would be more visitor friendly especially for those with mobility issues as they go round the museum slower than able bodied. Other than that it was great place and I look forward to another visit. Keep up the great work preserving our yesterdays for our tomorrows
Really enjoyed it - it's not every day you get to go underground in a coal mine! Great tours with ex-miners telling you all about it - get to go down in the mine lift, wear helmets and lamps etc. Was underground for a good hour, with really expereinced and interesting guide. Great underground adventure for kids and adults alike! Would strongly recommend, even if you think it "sounds boring"!
The above ground museum is great and includes a cafe with free wifi. The food and drink is reasonably priced. The underground tour was great, led by former miners from various local pits. Booking online for the tour is recommended to avoid disappointment. The £3 donation is more than worth it. If you don't like it for whatever reason you can get your money back.
we had a very good visit I am a ex miner taken by my grandson and his girlfriend well worth it my wife is in wheel chair and we all went round together she would recommend it to users.there are wheelchair there for anyone who needs one electric ones not allowed down the pit ,there is also a cafe horses and a nature trail and short train ride .lots of photos and info in the cafe. the staff are very good and interesting even to people who no nothing about mines .Thanks for a very good day. The NCM is an excellent museum and offers something for everyone. My son insists on visiting the soft play at least once a month, I can take friends to the cafe and for a look round the exhibits, and my parents love it too as they really enjoy going underground and chatting to real miners who do the tours.
