Earl's Bu, Orphir
Categories: Ruins, Tourist Spots
Be transported back to the time when Vikings ruled the Orkney Islands at Earl's Bu, the ruins of a former manor house. Constructed during the Earldom of Orkney, the building is thought to date back to the 12th century and to have hosted lavish drinking parties. It features in the famous Orkneyinga Saga, which describes the venue's "many large ale vessels" and heated sitting room. While the ruins are not extensive, they provide an interesting glimpse into the islands' Nordic past. Nearby you can find a number of other places to visit relating to this period, including the remains of St. Nicholas Church directly adjacent. Put Earl's Bu into our Orphir itinerary planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Orphir.
