McCaig's Tower, Oban
(4.3/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Designed and commissioned by the same man, John Stuart McCaig, McCaig's Tower is a monument to the McCaig family that was built by local stonemasons. The original plans included a museum, gallery, and a series of sculptures of the McCaig family. However, McCaig passed away with only the outer walls completed. These walls still overlook the water and islands with landscaped gardens in the center. The walls sit like a crown above the city, and you'll find photo-worthy views of them from the town center. • So you don't have to be in a bear grylls suit or attitude--just enjoy the panoramic views on route and reward at the TOP. Mr McCaig new what he was creating long ago-for us now.
  • Don't bother struggling up there with a car: go up 'Jacob's ladder', next to the Congregational Church, turn left at the top and then follow the road, going up whenever there is a choice. It's big, im...  more »
  • We had a walk up here at dusk as we had heard so much about it. Easy to get to and plenty spaces for parking if you take the car. Nothing to see inside but is well looked after and the views from the ...  more »

  • Well worth the walk up to McCaig's tower for stunning views of Oban and the surrounding islands. A lovely small park in the centre. Highly recommend a visit and learn about the history behind it's creation.
  • Pretty cool attraction, although I feel sorry for the poor council who got lumbered with the cost of maintenance. Designed as a make-work scheme during a period of high unemployment, it's very impressive from up close.
  • McCaig's Tower is on the very top of a hill, so you see the town and ocean from above. There are many small signs leading towards it, and the hike is tiring (if you're not used to walking up steep hills) but it looked very beautiful and I had a lot of fun looking at the stonework and taking pictures.
  • A fantastic viewpoint overlooking Oban harbour looking outwards towards Mull.. A good walk up the hill to reach it but we'll worth the 10 minute walk
  • Beautiful view to the bay. The tower itself is a never finished project, just walls, but worths the few minutes walk from the town center. Best place to sit down and eat your sandwich while watching the beautiful panorama.
