Nottingham Castle, Nottingham

3.0
Castle · Hidden Gem · Art Museum
Once the main residence of the duke, Nottingham Castle is considered the city of Nottingham's best art gallery. The gallery got international attention when it hosted the "Waking Dreams" exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite art. In the permanent collection, you'll find watercolors by Paul Sandby, Wedgwood Jasperware, locally made salt-glazed stoneware, oil paintings, and a group of costumes that showcase locally made lace. All of these works of art are housed inside the castle's exquisitely preserved architecture, one of the rare examples of Artisan Mannerist style. Take a guided tour through the remaining rock-cut cellars, following a long passage that leads to the bottom of the rock that the castle rests on, known as Mortimer's Hole. • If you like history and old buildings, you're going to love walking around here. Not much of the original castle is left that "Robin Hood" would have recognised, but it's still a nice place to visit. Ralph.
  • It's a good place for a short visit. The castle is amazing and the museum with its collection even more so. The price of the ticket is reasonable but you may get some discounts. The views from the castle are amazing. This allows you to understand why they built the castle there. The price for the caves is a bit disappointing. Should be half the price at most. The caves are great, and the stories told by the guide amazing, but you have already paid for the entrance and this again? That much? Inside the castle you can get something to eat or drink. You've got toilets everywhere. Everything is prepared nicely and conveniently. You can also get some really nice souvenirs.
  • The castle was closed, but the outside of it looked amazing. Maybe we will have better luck next time !
  • The castle looked like a nice attraction but unfortunate it was closed for refurbishment. We saw the Robin Hood statue and had a nice walk around the outside of the castle. The grounds look nice and medieval with what looked like dungeons.
