Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich

4.2
#2 of 14 in Museums in Norwich
Art Museum Museum
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts offers an art gallery in addition to a museum based on the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection, which contains items spanning 5,000 years of human creative endeavors. Some must-see items from that collection include a 3,000-year-old Egyptian hippo, a 500-year-old Inca-made silver llama, and an important early study by Picasso. Spend some time interacting with the architecture, as the building’s cuboid structure made of clad steel and a clever basement extension make up celebrated works in the oeuvre of Lord Foster. Relax at the cafe, with a menu focused on local ingredients, which overlooks the modern sculpture garden. • The permanent exhibition here is very interesting, gathered together by the Sainsbury family, with several great temporary exhibitions throughout the year. I would also recommend a walk round the UEA ...  more »

  • Remarkable collection. Wonderful art in a Norman Foster building. More Francis Bacon paintings than you can imagine.
  • Interesting collection of African art. Runs various art sessions for children during school holidays that need to be booked in advance. They also run a "Sunday studio", with different art activities for children/families inspired from the sainsbury's centre collection.
  • A lovely location on the side of the lake, and some wonderful exhibits. Lovely shop with all kinds of things for sale - well worth a visit!
  • Fantastic experience seeing the Queen arrive. Lovely venue one I would recommend!
  • Interesting and diverse displays, modern toilets, and a great café with a lovely view. The café has quite limited vegan options, which is the only reason I've knocked off a star.
