Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich

4.3
#1 of 13 in Museums in Norwich
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts offers an art gallery in addition to a museum based on the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection, which contains items spanning 5,000 years of human creative endeavors. Some must-see items from that collection include a 3,000-year-old Egyptian hippo, a 500-year-old Inca-made silver llama, and an important early study by Picasso. Spend some time interacting with the architecture, as the building’s cuboid structure made of clad steel and a clever basement extension make up celebrated works in the oeuvre of Lord Foster. Relax at the cafe, with a menu focused on local ingredients, which overlooks the modern sculpture garden. Before you visit Norwich, use our trip planner to discover what you can do and see there.

  • This is one of the most beautiful art galleries I have ever been to. The permanent collection is beautifully curated and presented, with no hierarchy between art works - all periods, geographical origins, types of art... are all presented on an equal level, with no explanatory texts, it leaves the viewer to fully enjoy the artworks through their own knowledge, emotions, perspectives... It is so refreshing, and also stunning, moving, beautiful.
  • Has generally very interesting exhibits, changing very frequently, but some of the collections can be a little pretentious. The restaurant has a full glass feature wall letting in natural light which is lovely - I have attended events with catering here but have not made a purpose trip to eat there. A great place to wander around for an afternoon as part of a visit to the grounds of UEA, or attend an event here.
  • The Faberge jewel collection though limited was interesting. A bit overpriced for what was there! Free parking advertised but very limited. Policed by officious retirees who were less than helpful!!
  • An interesting, modern setting that houses a good standing collection and a series of changing exhibits throughout the year. The restaurant serves good tea and sandwiches. Can be spotted in several of the Avengers films.
  • Lovely place to visit. Large grounds with lake and sculpture trail. Restaurant is beautiful bright area. Prices reasonable and food is delicious. Some interesting objects in Sainsbury collection
