Norwich Castle, Norwich

(4.2/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
William the Conqueror's only castle in East Anglia, Norwich Castle is one of Norwich's 12 heritage sites. The museum holds important archaeological and historical artifacts inside its walls. The castle's galleries display ceramics, jewelry, glass, and textiles. The decorative art collection is the pride of the castle, so you might want to take extra time there. Find the history of the legendary Queen Boudica and the Vikings in the natural history gallery, and treasured paintings from Flemish artist Peter Tillemans among the art collection. One of the castle's largest collections is Margaret Fountaine's butterflies. Tour the castle and learn about its history through interactive displays. Also consider taking the separate popular tours of the dungeons and battlements. Our Norwich trip itinerary planner makes visiting Norwich Castle and other Norwich attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • There was so much to see we spent an entire day there and that was without doing any of the tours. Tasty lunch in the cafe too.  more »

  • Staff were very friendly and very helpful. Loved staying at their accommodation. Will definitely come back to stay in the future, hopefully for longer instead of a weekend. I had lasagne there and it was heaven. The best I have ever had.
  • The Castle is a real gem of a find just off the beaten track and no more than a 10-15 minute walk into town. Take a stroll along the scenic leafy willow lined river, in between beautiful historic houses and cottages, and through the Cathedral grounds to the centre of the City. The accommodation itself comprises two well equipped self catering style studios which are completely separate from the pub building. There is also parking. You will find breakfast already in the room for you to enjoy in the morning. The usual facilities and comforts are there and the rooms are clean, tidy and well appointed. However, should you need anything, just call the pub using the phone in the room. The owners and staff are extremely helpful and more than accommodating. The Castle pub itself is a lovely historic building with a fabulous garden. There’s the most beautiful wisteria flowering this time of year. If you arrive on a nice day – make sure you enjoy a drink from the bar, or have a tea or coffee and sit out in the garden. Music plays there as well as in both bars so you can really chill out and relax. Food is also served from the bar. There’s a good choice of food which arrives promptly and is value for money. There is a large separate function room at the top of the garden which opens at weekends as a night club, and for events. The interior of the Castle is clean and modern, and the staff are pleasant and hospitable. There is a cocktail style bar as you enter; and a jukebox plus a pool table in the main bar. Quiz nights run on a Tuesday plus there’s other entertainment at weekends. Just behind the premises is a hill where you can walk up to a viewing point and enjoy spectacular views of the city, including the medieval castle and skyline. Just ask the staff for directions! All in all, a great value for money place to stay when visiting the city without being slap bang in the centre. It’s the best of both worlds as you have the scenic areas within quick and easy access to the bustle of the city centre.
