Sixfields Stadium, Northampton

3.2
Sixfields Stadium is a 7,798-capacity all-seater sports stadium in the Sixfields area on the west side of Northampton, England. It has been the home ground of Northampton Town Football Club following their move from the County Ground in October 1994. It was also rented by Coventry City between July 2013 and August 2014. The site also hosts athletics in the adjacent stadium. Aside from being a sports venue, Sixfields also houses conference facilities.HistorySince 1897, Northampton Town had played their home games at the County Cricket Ground, sharing it with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. Because of the larger size of a cricket pitch, the football ground only had stands on three sides. Northampton Town chose to construct their own stadium, more suitable for football, in the Sixfields area of Northampton. The stadium had been scheduled to be opened at the start of the 1994–95, but was not ready on time and as a result Northampton began the season still at the County Ground. The first game to be played at Sixfields was against Barnet in Division Three on 15 October 1994. The match ended in a 1–1 draw, with striker Martin Aldridge scoring the first goal at the new stadium.

  • Hard to give the Sixfields Stadium more than 3 stars. As a faithful Cobblers attendee for 20+ years, it's fair to say that Sixfields is a better viewing experience than was the 'old' County Ground, but it still lacks a bit of pizzaz for sure! However, it's handily placed for access and egress from the local train station and all the major motorways and there's plentiful parking and eateries, not too far away. At this time, one side of the ground is a shabby skeleton of a stand due to 'local' financial troubles but the current capacity of circa 7.6k 'patrons' is rarely ever achieved anyway.
  • Plenty of places to go and eat and drink before and after. Car parking is easy the rugby was also on later was not a problem. The ground is clean and modern with good facilities. A bottle of water at £2.40 was the only issue.
  • The evening I went to the stadium it was tipping down with rain and the only cover was right at the back of the stand. Luckily there weren't too many people so could do this although my seat was in the front row. Nice and friendly people though.
  • Good light car park close to ground, nice sheltered ground with good facilities and felt good family atmosphere and safe.
  • Maybe 5 stars if we were playing as well as in 15/16 season!!
