  • Went for a training day rather than visiting museum. Staff attentive and friendly. Lunch was provided, simple but good. Would recommend and will return to visit museum. I'm a wheelchair user and managed fine with the rooms we were using. I don't know how accessible the tours are. Would recommend phoning and having a chat with staff. They were friendly and approachable.
  • Amazing place to visit! Loved becoming absorbed in the history that seeps out of the mine buildings! The tours by ex miners are brilliant. Well worth a visit with all the family.
  • A fascinating journey into the lives of coal miners (and into the mine!) The tours are given by miners who used to work there until the mine closed in 1981, which makes it a truly unique experience. Each miner has a different story to tell and, as you can imagine, many of these gentlemen are not extremely young. So, visit now if you really want to get this experience, as these incredible guides will probably get a well-deserved proper retirement in the not-so-distant future! A great experience, whether you have kids or not, but take very warm clothes with you as it is cold down the mine, whatever the weather outside (which tends to be cold anyway!)
  • Well worth a visit if you have plenty of time. Good parking, well signposted and very interesting. See the machinery and the history of an amazing industry. Superb gift shop and cafe too !
  • Came on a school visit - had an excellent tour - properly fascinating! Tour guide was enthralling and his stories of how he'd used to work there really brought the place to life. I had no idea quite how far they'd walk underground to get to the coalface.
