Carisbrooke Castle, Newport

4.4
Most people know Carisbrooke Castle as the place where Charles I was imprisoned. Nowadays this 12th-century Norman castle offers visitors a variety of activities. Explore the grounds of this well-preserved fortress, including the Great Hall, the Great Chamber, and several smaller rooms open to the public. A museum within the castle features Charles I memorabilia and objects connected to the Isle of Wight. Take a stroll along the gravel paths of the Edwardian-style Princess Beatrice Garden, and visit the adjacent chapel. Kids will enjoy a visit to the castle's resident donkeys as they demonstrate turning a 16th-century tread wheel. A tearoom serves a selection of hot and cold food, and there is plenty of room for picnicking on the grounds, which have benches and picnic tables. • Carisbrooke Castle In Isle Of Weight is a nice place to visit in the Countryside and has got long interesting history about the Royals of ancient times . One more thing the Donkey's 3-6 minutes job to get the water for the Castle is very much interesting... our kids; they enjoyed there . It was good Trip to the castle. Thank you.
  • I really enjoyed this place and there was a lot more to do than I expected. It was standard national trust prices; about a tenner for entry unless you're a national trust member and then it's free. It was a beautiful place to visit. And I like that you can go up the keep and walk around the castle walls. There is a free museum based in the castle that was small but had some interesting items. A very beautiful place.
  • I found this castle atmospheric due to the walls being almost intact and the buildings being partly in ruins and partly habitable. The presence of a garden and the tranquility of the surroundings adds to the dynamic of the situation. It was inspiring to walk round both inside and outside the wall and to be able to climb up to the top of the keep.
  • Just a lovely historic castle. Great views over the Island from the walls. Wonderful gardens. Lovely little cafe.
  • A fantastic family day out! Steeped in history and plenty of things to keep the kids busy! Some amazing views offered from the wall and keep! Plenty of parking very close by.
