Castle History Museum
Most people know Carisbrooke Castle as the place where Charles I was imprisoned. Nowadays this 12th-century Norman castle offers visitors a variety of activities. Explore the grounds of this well-preserved fortress, including the Great Hall, the Great Chamber, and several smaller rooms open to the public. A museum within the castle features Charles I memorabilia and objects connected to the Isle of Wight. Take a stroll along the gravel paths of the Edwardian-style Princess Beatrice Garden, and visit the adjacent chapel. Kids will enjoy a visit to the castle's resident donkeys as they demonstrate turning a 16th-century tread wheel. A tearoom serves a selection of hot and cold food, and there is plenty of room for picnicking on the grounds, which have benches and picnic tables. • Carisbrooke Castle is situated close to the county town of Newport. Supported by English Heritage, the castle has enough to see and do to keep you entertained for half a day. The donkey show is well worth seeing, and the museum is quite fascinating. It is really worth trying to time a visit with one of the activities, such as the jousting that takes place during the summer holidays, this is really worth spending a day watching. There is a nice tearoom in the grounds, which gets very busy! Be prepared for lots of steps if you wish to walk the perimeter of the castle and take in the beautiful views of the Isle of Wight.
  • A bit more here than other castles! There were more internal buildings which gave you more options to explore. Interesting and historical. A must for anyone interested in English history.
  • Great to visit. Spacious grounds. Plenty of car parking. Lots of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert memorabilia and locations very well displayed. Good food at both the cafeteria and the restaurant in the old chapel of the house
  • Always a good place to go - climb the many steps to the keep, stroll around the bowling green, see the donkeys work the wheel - and check out the one of a kind museum.
  • This was a real surprise. One of the best kept old castles you can find in the UK. Almost everything you see is part of the original building. The "show" with a donkey that turns a wheel to lift a bucket from a well is both interesting and fun, especially for kids.
