Carisbrooke Castle, Newport

4.5
Castle · History Museum
Most people know Carisbrooke Castle as the place where Charles I was imprisoned. Nowadays this 12th-century Norman castle offers visitors a variety of activities. Explore the grounds of this well-preserved fortress, including the Great Hall, the Great Chamber, and several smaller rooms open to the public. A museum within the castle features Charles I memorabilia and objects connected to the Isle of Wight. Take a stroll along the gravel paths of the Edwardian-style Princess Beatrice Garden, and visit the adjacent chapel. Kids will enjoy a visit to the castle's resident donkeys as they demonstrate turning a 16th-century tread wheel. A tearoom serves a selection of hot and cold food, and there is plenty of room for picnicking on the grounds, which have benches and picnic tables. • We had such a great day walking around the grounds of the castle. We went Al the way to the top & the views were amazing. The boys loved sitting on the cannons but the highlight had to be seeing the.....  more »
  • Awful Halloween haunted night paid £17 each for 40 minutes. Had someone telling us a story about a graveyard and then learned off staff it was the site of an old cafe. Couldn’t go inside due to...  more »
  • This is one of the better castles I have visited. You can walk the battlements but be careful the steps are uneven and could be very tricky if wet, you also have to like heights. There is a lot to...  more »

  • I loved it here! 😄 Great day out for all. The donkeys are so cute. 😍 The medieval events that are on are amazing, and the view from the top of the castle is incredible! The museum is very interesting and all the staff are friendly and helpful. Very very highly recommend!!! ☺️
  • This is a really amazing castle in fantastic condition. There is plenty for the children to do and so much to see. We particularly enjoyed the view from the tower and all the information dotted around the site. The children loved that there are donkeys at the site and that you can see them in action operating the well. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Also there is a really great coffee shop/tea room
  • A very impressive castle, excellent historical presentation area, fantastic donkey demonstration and a great cafe and seats near the cafe. The only area of improvement is I felt a bit more seating in the main ground would have made visitors more inclined to stay longer (thus buy more food, drink etc.). However I'd recommend this site to any visitors of the Isle.
  • Excellent remains of a castle.Information superb. Museum one of the best I've seen. Walks wonderful. Donkeys, VERY intelligent, hilarious with their antics and have everything worked out perfectly. Altogether great day made all the better by knowledgeable, helpful thoughtful staff.
  • Everything you'd expect from English Heritage. Well organized with interesting exhibits. Lots of room for the little ones to run around and spots to sit and absorb the history of the place. Bit of a tricky approach on foot from town with a stroller but so worth the visit.
