  • We loved this. It's an inspiring community project. It had been raining when we went and the Hydro was generating 50kw/h - free and green. Enough to power 50+ homes. We liked the fact that they were u...  more »

  • Lovely walks over and around the river with plenty of information boards about the buildings and area.
  • IS ARCHIE DEAD IN THE WATER?????????????? As far as I can see the whole idea of generating electricity from a water powered Archemdes Screw was a failure from the start! It has cost hundreds of thousands of pounds with shareholder's expecting to get a return but they never will. Surely a better project would have been a solar array on a prominent building in the town. These are virtually maintenance free unlike "Archie" and could provide a basic return on shareholder's investments. I wonder why they were not installed at every waterfall in the UK, possiblt because anyone with any sense could see that they couldn't and wouldn't work. The one at Marple is the same, the engineer in charge told me he wished he had never started the project as it will never pay for itself let alone generate a proffit I have given up trailing down to witness a dead lump of expensive machinery in the Torrs. Any excuse will do for it not working....Bottom bearing worn out--after a few years, that is not good enough. Now the excuse is not enough water flowing over the weir. -- it has been one of the wettest winters for many years. What next- the wrong sort of water or is that type of excuse reserved for British Rail. Visited April 2017
