Saint Nicholas Church, Moreton

5.0
St Nicholas is a Church of England parish church at Moreton, Dorset, England. It is known for its thirteen windows, engraved by the poet and artist Sir Laurence Whistler. T. E. Lawrence was buried in the separate churchyard.HistoryThe church's dedication was changed in 1490, to St Nicholas having previously been dedicated to St Magnus Martyr. The church was rebuilt in the 18th century, reusing its medieval foundations. The rebuilding was financed by the Frampton family, who lived in the nearby manor house. The adventurer T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"), who died in 1935, is buried in the separate churchyard. He was a cousin of the Frampton family and had been a frequent visitor to their home, Okers Wood House. Lawrence's mother arranged with the Framptons to have him buried in their family plot in the separate burial ground of St Nicholas' Church. Mourners included Winston and Clementine Churchill, E. M. Forster, and Lawrence's youngest brother Arnold. In 1940, the church suffered a direct hit from a German bomb, and was largely destroyed. It was rebuilt over the following decade, but the stained glass windows were replaced with plain green glass, which was not liked by the congregation.WindowsLaurence Whistler was commissioned to provide engraved glass replacements, and after making twelve, he offered to make and donate the thirteenth with a design on the theme of Forgiveness featuring Judas. The offer was declined, but he made the window anyway. After being displayed in a local museum, it was eventually installed - on the outside of the church (as the artist intended) - in 2014.

  • The windows (by Laurence Whistler) are stunning. The church is light and airy, even on a dull, rainy day. So glad we visited.  more »
  • The church has Whistlers etched windows, with no colour, but stunningly done and let a lot of light into the church, one window can only be viewed from the outside, written information on the windows ...  more »

  • The church is lovely, the etched glass absolutely beautiful, wonderful place to visit.
  • Wow! The windows are stunning!! Beautiful. A must to go and see 🙂
  • The first thing that strikes you as you enter this church is how bright it seems in contrast to so many C of E churches. The second thing that you notice is the absence of stained glass, which tends to account for the brightness. The history of the windows is fascinating, and there is a booklet available for purchase which details the same, and contains many good illustrations. The glass is difficult to photograph, though almost everybody tries. A dull day is better than bright sunshine, and a viewpoint that has a dark exterior background (like trees) can improve the contrast. There are lots of other good details, like the painted font, the carved and painted coats-of-arms adorning the vaults in the apse and the nave, and the lovely tiled floor. The cemetery, only a couple of hundred metres away, is the resting place of T. E. Lawrence, and Clouds Hill, Lawrence's home, is only a few kilometres to the north. They are both worth a visit.
  • Stunning stain glass by Sir Laurence Whistler in this church which was bombed in 1940. Note Lawrence’s grave is some way from the church in a separate graveyard.
  • A beatiful Anglican Church packed with details. The authentic graveyard, the etched windows, and the well maintained interiour make this a great little church to visit when you're in the area. Fits in perfectly if you're doing the Lawrence of Arabia Trail !
