Montgomery Castle, Montgomery

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Montgomery
Montgomery Castle is a stone masonry castle looking over the town of Montgomery in Powys, Mid Wales. It is one of many Norman castles on the border between Wales and England.Motte and bailey castleThe original motte and bailey is now known as Hen Domen and was built at the order of Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, sometime between 1071 and 1074. On the rebellion of his son Robert of Belleme in 1102, the castle was given to Baldwin de Boulers. It is from Baldwin that Montgomery gets its Welsh name, Trefaldwyn (Baldwin's town). The de Boulers (later known as Bowdler) family held the castle until 1215, when the fortress was destroyed by Prince Llywelyn ab Iorwerth. The motte and bailey was subsequently refortified as an outpost for the new stone castle and probably survived until around 1300.

  • Fantastic piece of history. You can still see how much of the castle was laid out and why it was built where it is. Go on a good day for the views down the valleys and surrounding hills. For those not up to the steep climb up the road from the town there is a car park.
  • Stopped here for a break driving to North Wales. Free parking & a short walk along the side of a hill (further parking available in the town, near the Town Hall with toilets but steeper climb). The castle is well worth a visit, lots of information boards explaining the history and layout of the castle and loads to explore. Boys had fun scrambling around walls and over/under bridges and there is a small open pavillion that you could use for a picnic on a rainy day. Town of Montgomery is lovely, there is a Museum and restaurants/cafes.
  • On a very steep hill but loved it. Old ruin castle history amazing. Amazing views.
  • This place is in one of the most beautiful settings. Can see for miles around. Me and the wife love walking here and the best bonus it's absolutely free!!!
  • Interesting historical castle. Outstanding panoramic views of the local area.
