Montgomery Castle is a stone masonry castle looking over the town of Montgomery in Powys, Mid Wales. It is one of many Norman castles on the border between Wales and England.Motte and bailey castleThe original motte and bailey is now known as Hen Domen and was built at the order of Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, sometime between 1071 and 1074. On the rebellion of his son Robert of Belleme in 1102, the castle was given to Baldwin de Boulers. It is from Baldwin that Montgomery gets its Welsh name, Trefaldwyn (Baldwin's town). The de Boulers (later known as Bowdler) family held the castle until 1215, when the fortress was destroyed by Prince Llywelyn ab Iorwerth. The motte and bailey was subsequently refortified as an outpost for the new stone castle and probably survived until around 1300.Our Montgomery online driving holiday planner makes visiting Montgomery Castle and other Montgomery attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Montgomery Castle Reviews
This isn't the kind of place to drive to but if you are in the area make a detour. Park in Montgomery and walk up the very steep hill to get to the castle. The atmosphere and views are flipping' amazi... more »
Having, earlier in the day, walked up to Penforwyn Castle, I was delighted I could drive up here. The remains are few, but you can get an outline of what did stand here. There's information boards as ... more »

The scenery is amazing on a clear day. Enjoyed a wander around only problem was we hiked 6 miles to look around to find we couldn't take the dog in. Only remains we have visited that don't allow dogs on leads. Disrupted a very long hike to take it in turns going in otherwise very nice
Free, with lovely views from the castle..
Lovely ruined castle, kept in good repair. Panoramic views and good for a quick game of hide and seek.
Very cool place to visit, quiet and peaceful.
Excellent little place- free to visit and either an easy walk from the Castle car park or a nice challenge uphill from either Bunners shop up a track or a steep hill walk up tarmac road by the Dragon Hotel. The view on a clear day is immense. Either way you shouldn't visit Montgomery without checking it out.
