The Wheel of Manchester, Manchester

2.5
The Wheel of Manchester was a transportable Ferris wheel installation at Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, England. The wheel was originally a smaller installation based in Exchange Square, first assembled in 2004. The wheel's size was increased to 60m in 2007, and plans existed to increase this further. However, these plans were never submitted. The wheel was dismantled in 2012 to make way for 2012 Olympics celebrations and Metrolink construction work. In 2013, a new 52.7m wheel was installed in Piccadilly Gardens.History2004–2007The first wheel was first installed in 2004 which was a success and consequently a larger 60m wheel was erected in May 2007.2007–2012The wheel returned in May 2007 and was sponsored by the Manchester Evening News. A larger wheel was initially planned for 2008, but it was never installed. In 2010, Manchester City Council proposed a 120m wheel, to be operated by World Tourist Attractions, as a replacement for the existing transportable installation, with Piccadilly Gardens the possible site and completion expected by Christmas 2011. The installation was later taken over by Great City Attractions when World Tourist Attractions merged with Great Wheel Corporation. In 2011 it became known as The Capital Wheel of Manchester, through a sponsorship deal with Capital FM. Although plans for a larger wheel were not publicly rejected, they never materialised.

  • The weather wasn't great when we went on the wheel but that was ok because the capsules are enclosed. The guy working at the wheel was friendly and we got to have an extra round because it wasn't busy...  more »
  • I moved to Manchester in August 2015 and Piccadilly gardens no longer has this ride installed. Just thought the site should be updated - the wheel was removed sometime prior to August 2015.  more »
  • Feel the British people really have Ferris wheels complex, many places have the Ferris wheel. Although Manchester not London's famous, but it is a good place to watch the panoramic view of Manchester. Evening on the Ferris wheel, slowly turning, Manchester panorama panoramic view slowly.

  • I used Smart wheels to refurbish my Focus ST alloys. Having checked out a few places and reading reviews I decided to use Smart Wheels. It was the right choice, same day service,VERY good price the attention to detail spot on. All the lads their were very helpful and couldn't do enough. I was a bit worried about how the wheels would turn out. Worry not immaculate is the way they ended up. I would 100% recommend Smart Wheels for your Alloy refurbishment.
  • Excellent customer service. I had a slight problem with air leaking from 1 wheel, a day or so after they powder coated my wheels. They repaired it as soon as I brought it to there attention. The wheels look class too. Great advice and great work. Thankyou
