GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE MUSEUM & ARCHIVES, Manchester

4.6
‘Explore Manchester’s hidden past – a labyrinth of alleyways and slums, interrupted only by the huge mills casting shadows below. An eerie underworld where police officers were kept busy apprehending unsavoury characters of all ages.

The Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archives enables you to experience what life was really like for these officers in a busy Victorian police station.

You’ll also see how times have changed and how policing has evolved to meet today’s needs.

Located in the historic Northern Quarter of Manchester, the Museum was one of the cities earliest police stations and has been lovingly restored to reflect the reality of policing in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.

See where Manchester’s criminals were charged and fingerprinted before being put into the cells, often packed with up to twelve men on a busy night! Why not take a seat on one of the cell beds with their wooden pillows.

Admire the polished wood panels and stained glass in the 1895 Magistrate’s Court and experience how inmates would have felt standing in the dock!

  • This is a great little museum and worth going to on a Tuesday. Although this is a small museum the staff there were all helpful, friendly and having all worked in the police were incredibly knowledgeable. The exhibitions are clean and well maintained. My 9 year old particularly liked having access to police cells.
  • A Great museum to spend a couple of hours looking at how the police used to work in this old police station.. See the cells, old D. I office, old uniform, weapons and stories of old cases and the staff are all retired police who are only to happy to tell you old stories or answer any questions you may have. Take the kids and let them dress up in police uniform.. Please note this museum is free but only open on Tuesdays...
  • A really fascinating morning looking at how policing has changed in Manchester over the centuries. Good displays in an original police station, but the best thing were the people. Ex bobbies talking about local police history going back to the 1800's and also sharing some of their own experiences from the 1960's onwards. A brilliant museum staffed by lovely volunteers who bring it all to life. Perhaps they should encourage schools and youngsters to visit, as we were told that groups of 6 or more could book private tours.
  • Great museum, unexpectedly interesting. - 1 star as it is only open one day a week.
  • One of the best small museums in Manchester - a hidden gem. Open Tuesdays and Thursdays (school hols only).
