Shopping Mall Shopping
Fremlin Walk is an outdoor shopping centre in Maidstone town centre, Kent. It opened in 2005 after several years of development by Centros Miller to include 350000sqft of shopping and a 760 space car park. The original owner was Land Securities plc. Legal & General Property bought the centre in 2011 for £92 million.LocationThe main pedestrian entrance to the centre is from the pedestrianised Week Street to the east. There are other pedestrian entrances from St Faith's Street to the north and Earl Street, to the south. The A229 Fairmeadow runs parallel to the River Medway at the western end of the centre, but is approximately 2 storeys lower than the shopping centre. The car park for the centre is located below the House of Fraser department store at the western end; vehicle access is from Fairmeadow and Earl Street.Maidstone East railway station is 330m north of the main pedestrian entrance, along Week Street.HistoryThe site was previously a factory making Fremlins' Ales & Beers, However, in the 1970s, the Victorian brewery was closed and the existing building just used as a bottling depot. Later on, the site was downgraded once more to a despatch depot. The only original structure from when the site was a brewery, is the arch entrance and clock. To fit in with the scheme of 'new life' for the river area in the town, it was decided that the shipping depot should be demolished, and something new put in its place; a shopping centre.

  • I remember a time when all of this had cars running through it. Not now no problem walking about. You only have to dodge people and crowds watching street entertainers. Plenty of shops to keep the lad...  more »

  • This should be a more pleasant experience than it is. Thought has clearly gone into the design, but for a wheelchair user it's not entirely ideal. Lifts were out of order in the car park, and signage to help me get up to the shopping centre non-existent, resulting in me having to wheel around and exit via a vehicle barrier. Once I finally got up there, it all felt dull, grey and sterile. A bit of a wasteland. It's a shame, but I guess it fits with the rest of that part of the town centre which is down at heel and uninspiring. A place where retail dreams came to die.
  • It's a shopping centre. We should all be buying less stuff, so with this in mind we should all probably stay at home and enjoy spending time with those we love, or reading. You don't need to buy that thing you wondered out of the house on Saturday morning to buy - it's a distraction, a pacifier. It get's two stars because at least it's in the open air.
  • An open air shopping area with a good range of shops. There are a large number of fashion retailers here and a short walk away on Week Street there is a further choice clothes shops. With a multi storey car park less than a minutes walk away and public toilets (ladies were very clean and well stocked on my visit). There are lifts too from this car park for disabled access to Fremlins and adjoining roads as Maidstone town centre has a couple of steep hills. TIP:- traffic here gets busy and car parks fill up quickly, so get here early if going on a weekend.
  • great parking(if a little expensive) nice new shopping centre with good selection of shops.
  • Nice range of shops in a large open setting. Car park is a little pricey as there are cheaper places to park in Maidstone
