Ludlow Castle, Ludlow
(4.3/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Constructed in the 11th century, Ludlow Castle, retains the spark of its former medieval glory. You can explore many parts of the castle, which has changed hands and owners throughout the centuries, on your own. Information at the site is lacking, so if you’re interested in the history of the place, be sure to read up in advance. But with preserved areas and a bit of imagination, you can envision how the castle might have been used in days of yore. Climb one of the towers to enjoy the view and take tea by the entrance to bring you back into the 21st century. Take a look at our Ludlow travel itinerary planner to schedule your visit to Ludlow Castle and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • As castle ruins go, this has to be one of the best and most interesting I've experienced. Lots of areas to explore - though be warned, the wind cuts right through it so try to visit on a warm/still day if you can (we nearly froze!). £5 for an adult to get in, which I feel is reasonable, given how much of the castle is intact and open to the public. Nice little gift shop too. Definitely worth a look if you are Ludlow!
  • This castle is quite large and has lots of places to check out. Kids will love exploring and going up some of the floors. Views are great when your at the top, both castle and countryside itself. Carpark or street parking chargeable but close. A lovely morning visit with cafe for lunch should you want it. I also like the path around the outside to the river and looking up at the walls and fortifications outside.
  • Right in the middle of an incredibly well kept town, this is a good historic attraction to spend an hour or so at. Some narrow staircases up to cracking views, but shouldn't trouble most - old or young. Very relaxing as part of a stroll about the town.
  • Impressive remains of what was once an incredibly important fortification. Plenty of spaces to explore and great views from the upper levels. It would be nice to have a bit more information about the various parts of the castle and their history. Kids loved the shop!
  • Good place if you like history. Sometimes have good events on the grounds of the castle.
