Whitehall Gardens, London

4.2
#527 of 3,379 in Things to do in London
One of London's great thoroughfares, Whitehall Gardens passes numerous prominent memorials and government buildings along its journey from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. Named after the Palace of Whitehall, the residence of British monarchs until it burned down in 1698, the street visits, among other prominent sites, the broad neo-Baroque Old War Office Building and The Cenotaph, Britain's most prominent war memorial. Looking south from the latter, you'll notice the clocktower of Big Ben and the tower of Westminster Palace looming on the skyline. Whitehall Gardens is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, London Edition.

  • Wide, although not a long street with representative buildings: Horse Guards, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department of Health and other and numerous monuments, hence the visible-by Plaid-East entry in Downing Street.

  • If you want to relax during your lunch break and you're fed up manoeuvring between tourists in St. James's Park, this might be a good alternative for you. Nice, spacious little park where you can play table tennis as well. The traffic from Embankment can be a bit noisy which is a bit annoying.
  • Whitehall Gardens is a little gem. It is af beautiful little park and the perfect place for a rest when walking through the streets og London.
  • A quite place with sufficient seating but a lot of visitors with camera.
  • Small and well cared the gardens. A lovely place to sit and relax for a few moments. Close to several tube stops, the Thames, Big Ben etc but away from the hustle and bustle. No facilities. Just gardens and benches.
  • Great place to escape busy London and sit and watch the world go by, withing walking distance from Trafalgar Square and Embankment Station.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
