Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.

  • Somehow managed to fit in four tours over two days. All absolutely brilliant, even though I missed most of jack the ripper (may have been a tad late). I found all guides Nick (west and jtr), JJ (HP) a...  more »
  • Even though I spent a lot of time in this city it still has more to be discovered. With the recommendation of a friend I decided to join their walking tour and our tour guide, Matthew, was so friendly...  more »

  • Katie is the most phenomenal tour guide! She is not only witty and friendly, she is also incredibly knowledgeable and has an incredible talent for story telling. She can have you hanging on to the edge of your seat, laughing and crying, because she makes history come alive. If you take any London tour, be sure to take a Strawberry Tour and ask for Katie. You'll be glad you did!
  • Took the East London History tour. Rachel was my tour guide. She seemed very passionate about the place and knowledgeable about its history. The tour started at the Tower Hill Station and ended at the Temple Station. The tour combined both historic buildings and famous modern ones. It also highlighted places of certain pop culture significance like Fleet Street (Sweeney Todd). Rachel's input was particularly enjoyable because she attempted to tie in the City of London's history with its modern development in a coherent narrative while explaining the stories associated with the buildings and places. Overall, I would definitely recommend this tour for someone who doesn't want to simply visit places/spaces but to experience them through a local's eyes and explore the narratives surrounding them.
  • Walking tours are wonderful, and Ghost walking tours are my favorite! We had a wonderful experience with Strawberry Tours. Great history and storytelling. I wish we had time to do all of the different ones in London.
  • I went on a great ghost tour by Matthew! He is very energetic and a wonderful storyteller. Definitely recommend!
  • what a wonderful guide Mathew is, he is passionate and very good with his presentation of historical events as well as he engages with his group. I recommend this tour group and will be doing the Jack the Ripper and ghost tour. Thankyou again Mathew
