St. James's Park, London

#3 of 3,804 in Parks in England
St. James's Park is one of the most pleasurable green spaces in London. The oldest of the city's royal parks, it offers 23 hectares (57 acres) of lawns, trees, and playgrounds around a pond. Take a stroll down the queen's ceremonial route from Buckingham Palace, spot the palace and the London Eye from the Blue Bridge, and enjoy a waterside meal at Inn the Park while spotting ducks, geese, swans, and even pelicans. While in the park, keep an eye out for some of the plaques along the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. This 11 km (7 mi) route past buildings and locations related to the princess goes through this park, as well as Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens. A visit to St. James's Park represents just the start of the adventure when you use our London travel route builder website to plot your vacation.

  • We were family and enjoy the great variety of birds that live, as well as the squirrels. One pleasant walk all over green, with a nice Lake.

  • Beautiful place to walk around and take pictures, several families at the site, people running, I can feel the life of a Londoner off in the Park.

  • I love this park, what more is there to say? We dropped by after watching the guard change at Buckingham Palace. The weather that day was great and there were so many animals in the park. Definitely a good place for families with children, I am sure they will love the ducks and squirrels there. For the older folks - a good number of benches are available for sitting as well! I'd recommend a visit during the off-peak hours (definitely not during the periods of the guard change) for a more relaxing walk. :)
  • Love hanging out on the grass here. Despite it being in the heart of tourist land... It has a nice, tranquil feel. Also a good place to watch soldiers and horses coming to/from Buckingham Palace. I was also pleased to see some people hired to help tourists with questions, etc.
  • A good park in the centre of Westminster. Popular with tourists in the summer, but great for lunchtime walks throughout the year. A couple of nice cafes and an abundance of birds spanning a range of species - most notably, the famous pelicans!
  • A must if you are a visitor to London. A beautiful park with dramatic vistas looking towards Buckingham Palace, the Government buildings of Whitehall and the London Eye. Excellent restaurant overlooking the lake serving a good choice of healthy food. Look out for the pelicans on the lake. Enjoy.
  • Wonderful park to have a stroll through if your in central London! It is kept clean and has a great environmental feel with lots of ducks, pelicans etc. It does have public toilets but with a fee of 20p. Very nice place to visit with family, friends or for a morning jog if your local!
