St. Dunstan in the East Church Garden, London

(4.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Surround yourself with history and a calming garden at St. Dunstan in the East Church Garden. Although bombed out in World War II, the 12th-century church grounds were converted into a lovely garden teeming with green walkways, native vegetation, and old trees. Step away from the heart of London into the gardens, and admire the remains of the church--including a steeple designed by Christopher Wren at the turn of the 18th century. Look for a plant called winter's bark, whose vitamin C-rich leaves used to be consumed to prevent scurvy. Pack a picnic to get the most from this peaceful setting. • I went to London 3 times over the years and this church was a pleasant discovery! is a building bombed surrounded by greenery in the center of a city of palaces and gray skies. I fell in love, is a corner of paradise where for a few minutes you can distract the mind from all around. Doesn't even seem to stay in London! A place that you wouldn't expect! I recommend it!

  • Beautiful secret garden in the middle of central London. Me & my boyfriend took sandwich's and a coffee, and enjoyed our lunch peacefully in the gorgeous surroundings. This Church was turned into a garden when it was bombed in World War 2, it is well kept and has won many awards. It was extremely quiet (2 other small groups of visitors on a Saturday at 13:30), so the perfect place to relax outdoors after a busy morning of sight seeing!
  • This was such an amazing find! Beautiful small gardens inside the walls of a church ruin. Grass, benches and lovely plants explode out of the box to create a secret hideaway perfect in busy London. Such an interesting, unexpected view both inwards and outwards.
  • A great open, free space with a drenching of history. A great place to eat your lunch or to reflect.
  • Nice place for quiet contemplation. No cover in rain though and you don't need to spend hours here.
  • Serene place . Nice benches and old architecture. Have a good look around the plaques on the stonework are very interesting
