Southwark Playhouse is all about telling stories and inspiring the next generation of storytellers and theatre makers. It aims to facilitate the work of new and emerging theatre practitioners from early in their creative lives to the start of their professional careers.

Through our schools work we aim to introduce local people at a young age to the possibilities of great drama and the benefits of using theatre skills to facilitate learning. Each year we engage with over 5,000 school pupils through free schools performances and long-term in school curriculum support.

Through our Young Company (YoCo), a youth-led theatre company for local people between the ages of 11-25, we aim to introduce young people to the many and varied disciplines of running a semi-professional theatre company. YoCo provides a training ground to build confidence and inspire young people towards a career in the arts.

Our theatre programme aims to facilitate and showcase the work of some of the UK’s best up and coming talent with a focus on reinterpreting classic plays and contemporary plays of note. Our two atmospheric theatre spaces enable us to offer theatre artists and companies the opportunity to present their first fully realised productions. Over the past 20 years we have produced and presented early productions by many aspiring theatre practitioners many of whom are now enjoying flourishing careers. With our world travel planner, London attractions like Southwark Playhouse can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • A small theatre near the Elephant and Castle. Seats comfortable but no arm rests. Very hot for first half of show, air con may have failed. Show excellent, tickets good value.  more »
  • We came to see the function and we arrived 10 minutes later because we did not find parking nearby because we have been pushing the wheelchair and they told us that they had already sold the tickets.....  more »
  • Very intimate venue with a bar - Very friendly staff that made us feel very welcome. Seats were on a first come first served basis so get there early for a performance!  more »

  • Aspects of love. Wow! Really love this venue. Theatre in the round, such an intimate space. Everyone who works there seems really enthused by the place. Nice bar well stocked with surprisingly reasonable prices. Love all the nooks and crannies in this building makes for a really interesting overall experience. It will be interesting to see if they can recreate the intimacy in their new home when they move. Well done everybody at Southwark Playhouse.
  • You would think a small theatre couldn't handle West-End standard performances but, let me tell you, you're wrong. When I saw the Trench perform on this venue it absolutely blew my mind and became my favourite piece of theatre. They have many other cool plays at affordable prices and a bar at the entrance so you know you'll have a good time.
  • Came for the first time on a whim having moved to the area. Having been to mostly West End shows (as well as Shakespeare's globe and Broadway), I didn't know to expect, and I can only say I was let speechless. It was a very intimate experience, and the quality of the play direction and acting was world class. I will be coming back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it!!
  • A great little set up, great performance space and bar area. Accessible for all and easy to get to (halfway between Elephant and castle and Borough tube stations). Go early and eat across the road ... it's what I did.
  • Always worth checking out what's on at the playhouse, excellent revivals of off Broadway musicals as well as intense and interesting straight plays. All at an affordable price. Check out their pay as you go offers.
