Southbank Centre, London

4.1
#292 of 3,359 in Things to do in London
'One of London's most important spaces for displaying contemporary art, the Hayward Gallery is housed in an austere 1968 building that is both equally loved and derided by the majority of Londoners. Whichever camp you fall into, you'll agree that it makes an excellent hanging space for the blockbuster exhibitions it puts on.' (Lonely Planet)

Hayward Publishing - Publishing beautiful books on contemporary art. In collaboration with Hayward Gallery and the Arts Council Collection.

  • The Royal Festival Hall is a superb place to visit on the South Bank. Although it has a large concert hall with excellent views and acoustics it also has large public spaces which are open all day to everyone. Bars and cafes which have elevated views of the River Thames and great coffee and cakes. Many Londoners use the cafes for work in the day so it's always busy and lively. Tickets for concerts usually start at just £10 and you can see great orchestras, pop, and dance. The other venues reopen in 2018. The website has full details of all concerts and exhibitions.
  • Great meeting space on south bank. Often has free events such as exhibitions and music. I've been to meetups here and regularly meet friends to discuss projects or just catch up. Bar is a bit simple, only red stripe beer on tap for £5. Better deals elsewhere... Can be very busy and noisy sometimes.
  • A lovely space to walk around in, watch the ferries and boats, listen to talented musician buskers. A lot of eating places. I didn't come across any vegetarian or vegan outlets. Festival Hall Theatre, Festival Pier, Waterloo Bridge right there.
  • The building is great, so very organic in its interior decor. The staff are really friendly - and they need to be because finding the right door can be fun! The toilets are in a bit of a poor state considering the rest of the building. I was there for spoken word, and the acoustics left something to be desired.
  • What to say, amazing. Vast and eclectic range of events and artists throughout the year. The sound in the RFH is incredible, I count myself lucky to have been to so many great concerts here over the years.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
