Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.

  • It's a magnificent building and looks even more majestic from the huge inner courtyard with fountains. Lot of exhibitions, open air movie theatre during summer and ice skating rink during winter. Also free tour on Thursday and Saturday of the place.
  • I attended during London Photo exhibition; the venue is huge and lots of interesting things tucked away in easily missed corners. A visit not to be rushed. Good food; toilets inside the main building are unisex and can have long queues during busing times (conventional male/female facilities in basement area down stairs outside entrance to reception area).
  • A London treasure! Free to wander. Amazing exhibitions. They also offer tours. Nelson's Stair Case is beautiful. New restaurants to cater for all tastes.
  • The Courtald Gallery is on of the best privately owned collections of Impressionist paintings in the world. What could be better for tourists is if they made it better to take photographs. Most paintings are opposite bright windows, so there's a lot of flashback in pictures.
  • What a lovely place to get away from the surrounding hustle and bustle on a hot summer day! Accessing it from the ground floor, there is a clean bathroom and seating that saved our lives as we were endeavouring to shield ourselves from the heat. Further up, there is a café and a waterworks place where quite a few people were taking in the sun and having a coffee.
