  • The awesome 360* panoramic views amongst the finest south of the Thames, notwithstanding the Shard. An unusual renovated Georgian Folly attended by friendly and informed volunteers. The surrounding Oxleas Woods with a fine array of indigenous trees is also well worth a stroll. Though off the beaten track certainly worthwhile.
  • A very pleasant place to enjoy a coffee and light food surrounded by woodlands. Most od the seating is outdoors so it can get full on rainy days. You can climb to the top up a stone spiral staircase where there is a viewing platform to see fantastic views across London. This costs a few pounds and there is no lift but it is worth the climb if you are able. On the way up two rooms have been beautifully restored and there are clear information panels about the history of the building.
  • Worth the climb go the roof for the view. Cafe has improved since changing hands recently but still snacks rather than meals. Now dog friendly which is a bonus.
  • This castle is in fact a "folly" that a lady built in memory to her husband. The inside is only open on certain days of the week, so best check this before visiting. Winding stairs present access to small, historically-decorated floors and some interesting history. The view from the roof is the real highlight and it's probably worth picking a clear, dry day. Consider taking binoculars too! Compared to the attraction itself, the cafe on the ground floor is open on more days of the week. It does light bites and serves some alcoholic beverages (eg wine) as well as soft drinks, coffee, tea and nice cake. From here there are good walks in the woods and you can also walk across to Oxleas Wood cafe (also visible from Google Maps). Some paths require outdoor-style or walking- boots if it had been raining, and there are muddy puddles to avoid on these woodland paths. The remains of an old house or estate add interest to the landscape. In late summer the wild blackberry bushes offer free fruit. Overall, a recommended tourist attraction that is off the beaten track.
  • It is open in strange hours and on Saturdays only the small tea room at the bottom is open. Good ice-cream there though. Very good view from the top when it is clear.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
