Selfridges London, London

3.5
#19 of 359 in Shopping in London
A historic department store that set the tone for brand-name shopping in the early 20th century, Selfridges London remains one of the premiere British department stores. Inside the London location, designer brands are tastefully displayed on each of the many floors. The shop is the second largest in the country after Harrod's. Enjoy the pampering of staff while shopping or take a tour of the famous store. • I know this is a review site primarily for the London store not their online service, but I wanted to make anyone considering buying online aware of the pitfalls from buying from this company online. ...  more »

  • I wonder if once Selfridges used to be really good. When people think of the big department stores in London, you think 'Selfridges' and 'Harrods'. In truth Selfridges feels like it's sold out and lost its soul somewhere compared to Harrods. Don't get me wrong, if you can afford the designer labels here you may well be in heaven, and if you threw a stone you'd probably hit a customer service assistant, there's one everywhere. Unfortunately they're generally more interested in talking to one another, looking bored and generally feeling as if they're getting paid minimum wage whilst wealthy people mill around and buy items they could never dream of. It's possibly true, maybe at least partly, and that's where Selfridges let's itself down, the service isn't necessary bad, it's just inconsistent and I've never felt as if anyone wants to help but rather are forced to do so. The music in the store is horrendous, I don't know who came up with it, but wow, it's part night club and part designer stuff. I'd say hit the food court and the basement for the great things they have. The clothes...Oxford Street itself has a better variety, but if you have more money than sense you may as well stay. I like iconic stores like this, especially with the imposing exterior and great window displays to have personality, unfortunately this one has lost it, buried beneath loud awful music, insanely high prices, disinterested customer service folk and a selection which could do better. I recommend to visit for the window displays and the exterior building design, the wide range of highly priced items and it's iconic presence. Go to Harrods though, that's where the real charm lives on in London. For ships on Oxford street, House of Fraser, Debenhams, John Lewis do a better job at a variety of price ranges.
  • Well it's my favorite store in the world. Chatted to the guy at the wonderful whiskey section. The lady at the jewellery section let me try on all the rings and never got annoyed when I didn't buy. Finally the lady at the cheese counter let me try all the interesting looking cheeses. Yes it's still the best store in the world for me.
  • Enjoyed visiting your store on Tuesday. Friendly and polite staff in the restaurant. One person stood out for us, and that was Nicholas, your greeter on the door. He made eye contact on the way in and a friendly hello. On our way out, he again spoke to us and was so friendly, we stopped to have a few minutes chat with him. He is an asset to your store. Only one thing bothered me and that was having bits of paper with perfume spray pushed under our noses when we first walk in, which happened at every perfume counter. Please be aware, some people are sensitive to strong scents and could have an adverse effect on them.
  • I was in selfridges shopping for the first time ever the other day. Walked past this really nifty area called Red five, had some really awesome stuff. The guy working there was so nice and knew so much just had to drop him a review. Excellent service Mr Emmanuel, whatever they are paying you should be doubled. Hope you are there next time I go shopping!
  • Such a shame as the store is usually great. Went to buy some shoes but thy didn't have the right size in store so ordered online. Paid for gift wrap service but that wasn't available subsequently and then shoes arrived damaged and marked and casually thrown in a box with sawdust. Just appalling. Courier booked to collect and just didn't turn up at all to add insult to injury. Communicated my issues from the beginning but zero response thus far. For a luxury store this has all been pretty shoddy.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
