Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.

  • Recent visit and really enjoyed it. Lots to look at going through the ages. Was very busy but it was half term week. Lots for the kids to do as well so well worth a visit.  more »
  • Amazing place with lot of stocks which couldn't fit into Covent Garden Museum. Most od them are very well preserved and refurbished and there is massive display of signals signage and maps. Even is no...  more »
  • This is well worth a visit if you are interested in that sort of thing. It is a little out of the way, but at least it is close to Acton Town tube station on the District and Piccadilly lines. The bui...  more »

  • I've been there during an open weekend. This place is really interesting. There are so many things to discover from the past that you would never see otherwise. It's unbelievable how many years ago the London underground started operating. Here you can see many trains from the past, but also many buses. I travel on the tube every day and I wanted to know more. This is the perfect place to do it.
  • For anyone interested in the history of the London transport systems this is a great place to visit. Although only open a few times a year, it provides an opportunity for a glimpse at the things they have collected over the years that haven't made it into the main museum. I really enjoyed looking through all the rolling stock they were in the process of restoring, and getting to see some of the prototypes they have collected over the years.
  • Open a couple of weekends each year. Well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of London's transport, lots to do for kids and don't miss the miniature railway. Long queues at 11.00 even if you have a ticket, perhaps best to go a little later. There were quite a few food outlets out the back, but we are at the Jungle Cafe opposite Acton Town station - a good cafe.
  • The Museum Depot is only open to the public twice a year, but a visit is highly recommended, primarily because it houses some larger exhibits that there's no room for at the Covent Garden site.
  • Great collection of interesting London transport artefacts. Well worth a visit when they host an open day.
