London Fields, London

#60 of 100 in Parks in London
London Fields is a park and an area of historically common land adjoining the Hackney Central area of the London Borough of Hackney. The name is sometimes also used to apply to the neighbourhood around the park. The park covers an area of 12.65ha, and includes sporting and recreation facilities. The park's history is recorded as early as the 13th century, and it has been known as London Fields since the mid-16th century.HistoryIn 1275, the area now known as London Fields was recorded as common pasture land adjoining Cambridge Heath. The park was first recorded by name in 1540; in the singular as ‘London Field’. Still common ground, it was used by drovers to pasture their livestock before taking them to market in London. By the late 19th century the name had become pluralised to ‘London Fields’ and parts of the Fields were being lost to piecemeal development. There was a threat of comprehensive development of the park in 1860 but this threat was averted. In WW2 the park hosted an anti-aircraft battery in the south-west corner (the tarmac is still visible under the grass) and a bomb shelter in the vicinity of the tennis courts. The area was heavily bombed during the Blitz and houses along the northern and eastern edges of the park were among those destroyed. These houses had been built on land that was originally part of London Fields and the land was subsequently restored to the park. The previous boundary is marked by a wide arc of Plane trees.Sport and FacilitiesLondon Fields features a cricket pitch, a heated 50m lido and lido cafe, grass areas, designated barbecue area, a small BMX track, tennis courts, a table tennis table, toilet blocks and two children's play areas. In 2013 the Council turned a sandy, gritty area of London Fields into a pictorial meadow the size of a football pitch.

London Fields covers quite an extensive area and is a great open-space resource for locals. We recently walked through the park, bought provisions at Broadway Market and then returned for a delightful...  more »

I had a lovely walk around the park, lots of old trees and paths inside. All age groups appeared to use this park for their activities like cycling, dog walking, cricket, BBQ patch though no furniture...  more »

One of the best parks to go with your friends relax and spend the whole day there. Not big nor small it gives you a good space intimacy. The proximity with Broadway Market and Mare Street is a big plus in order to get the East London vibe needed. Must try.

Best park to people watch & barbecue! Big enough to find a secluded spot, go for a walk, drink at a pub on site, or even take photos in a nice wildflower field Highly recommend on a sunny day! Go to broadway market first and eat the food you buy (cheese & fruits & wine if you wish!) on a picnic blanket in London fields

Really like this park. Lots of places to stop and have a picnic and plenty for people watchers. The wild meadow is a great idea, lots of nice trees and the is no traffic nearby. Facilities include tennis courts, a lido (currently being refurbished, but always was a pleasant place to swim), play area, public loos (often with a queue weekends in summer). On some days there's cricket which I've enjoyed watching... Theres a barbecue area - which can get noisy and smoky on a summer weekend there's often people playing guitar. Watch out for the cycle-paths that cross the area. Lots of dog-walkers too. Close by is Broadway with lots of independant shops and an interesting market (lots of food but tends to be expensive). There are several good pubs nearby too.

This one of my childhood parks. It's a lovely open space with basketball court, tennis court, 2 playgrounds (preschool and older children) a lido and a designated BBQ area. It has become quite a trendy park now and fills up over the weekend, especially on a Saturday when people visit the popular Broadway market nearby.

Lovely park with open spaces, 2 kids playgrounds, basketball court, exercise area, outdoor pool, decent public toilets n is cycle friendly. Also has a bbq area which most parks in London don't allow. There is a children's centre too n across the road is London Fields primary school. On Saturdays is pricey Broadway market nearby which is usually very busy n Sunday a small organic food market in the school playground.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
