  • Lovely quiet museum, formally the home of Sir Frederic Leighton. We saw an exhibition of the work of Alma-Tedema. Possibly one of Victorian Britain's most technically gifted painters, though perhaps n...  more »

  • An excellent museum in Lord Leighton's own house. A fascinating building now well restored with some of the original artwork also on show. A must for anyone interested in Victorian Art, architecture and late Victorian painters, many of whom lived nearby. To top it all, the curator arranges a series of unique, unmissable and authoratitive exhibitions with associated events and lectures. A gem: and now a less hidden one than before. And you can also sip tea or join family yoga in the garden, which is also being restored.
  • The house has wonderful tiled interiors. If on your own, it is best to visit when no guided tours are happening. The Alma Tadema exhibition is exceptional in its coverage of the whole career of the artist and fits well with the decor in the rooms of the house.
  • Visited the current exhibition on Alma Tadema, which was lovely. Some great works on show. The museum itself is stunning, especially the Arab hall. Well worth the visit.
  • Undiscovered London gem!! The colors. The Islamic tiles. The designs. It is like being in Morocco. What a home & studio this artist created! Throughly enjoyed walking around gawping. Only wish they allowed pics.
  • Alma-Tadema exhibition was excellent, including essential masterpiece like the stunning The Roses of Heliogabalus. The audio guide proved quite informative and engaging. Leighton's house itself is well worth visiting too.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
