Gift & Specialty Shop Shopping
Set in a historic Victorian shop, James Smith & Sons offers a vast selection of sophisticated umbrellas, canes, and seatsticks for women and men. This privately owned company was founded in 1830 by the same family that still runs the business. Notice the interior, featuring original dark wood and glass cabinets, which have remained practically intact since 1865. Some of the products in the store are still handmade in its basement workshop, just like in the old days. The shop also provides repair services. • What a great shop. Enter the hologram. Go there even if you have no interest in umbrellas. And if you do, so much the better!
  • Expert assistance with all manner of things related to umbrellas and walking sticks. Yes, they sell modern umbrellas too and part of the service is the expert advice.
  • Showed me everything I needed to know abt umbrellas but I had to ask questions because they don't seem to talk unless you ask. Maybe it was how I was dressed but also they didn't mention the tax refund paper(don't forget to ask for it because they don't seem to mention it either, coulda saved 20£). Even tho I told them I was going to Canada with it. It's a solid umbrella. Very beautiful. But service is ok.... it's average
  • I bought a super cool umbrella and an excellent reduced Blackthorn root knob walking stick. Great inventory and very helpful staff.
  • Love the young fogey staff. Seem to live in an umbrella universe, distaneful of the uninitiated. Probably the best shop in London. Conjures up another age and time, never mind Dr Who, this is a time capsule.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
