4.7/5 based on 35+ reviews on the web
Set in a historic Victorian shop, James Smith & Sons offers a vast selection of sophisticated umbrellas, canes, and seatsticks for women and men. This privately owned company was founded in 1830 by the same family which still runs it. Notice the interior featuring original dark wood and glass cabinets, which remained practically intact since 1865. Some of the products in the store are still handmade at the workshop located in the basement of the store just like in the old days. The shop also provides repair services. • Technological advances have rendered many objects in modern life as redundant or obsolete. Not so the umbrella or cane. At some stage of our lives, each of us will require either or both! For many yea...  read more »
  • I bought the blue umbrella folding. Made of wood with hand feels like a classic cool good. and a friendly clerk was also tax free. If broken repair bring it with enthusiasm. Also cool was sold, good staff.

  • A must visit. One of the most Dickensian shops you will ever enter. I bought a 'proper' umbrella from this fine establishment 30 years ago (every man should have one) and it has served me well since. They do repairs too.
  • The store itself is beautiful. They specialize in walking sticks and stick umbrellas which they make. But they also sell other umbrellas from other brands. The umbrellas that they make are quite pricey but the quality is amazing and worth the investment.
  • We purchased a nice modern UV umbrella and a full wood mens umbrella. Once the clerk realized we werent just goofing off they were very nice. Im sure they get a lot of browsers but this was going to be our splurge. Very happy with the build of the umbrella. I didnt realize they actually cut them based on your height and its done within a matter of minutes in the shop below. Yes its expensive but I dont expect to have to purchase another umbrella for quite some time. And it looks great.
  • I bought a pair of maple walking sticks to help with a temporary disability. Pricey, as other reviewers have said, but quality is beautiful. Length measurement is very carefully done. Service is attentive without being OTT or gushing. A bonus is that most of the staff are very cute/handsome young men! ;-)
  • I think I'm right in saying it's London's oldest umbrella shop and one of the oldest shops still trading at it's original premises. Full of character and a real historical gem. Still selling really solid quality products to, if you're after an umbrella you could do a lot worse than popping in.
